HyperGrace is an insult to the Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer & Martyrs of Faith In his theological masterpiece, The Cost of Discipleship (1937), Bonhoeffer famously drew a line in the sand between two types of grace. His definitions serve as a prophetic critique of what we today call Hyper-Grace. Bonhoeffer defined CHEAP GRACE as the deadly enemy of the Church. "Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate." β€” Dietrich Bonhoeffer Discussing Costly grace, Bonhoeffer said "when God calls a man, He bids him 'come and die.'" To receive costly grace, our ego, our self-will, and our desire to be the masters of our own destiny must be put to death. It is a daily crucifixion of our selfish ambitions. You cannot cling to your old life while trying to grasp the new life Christ offers. He further stressed that the church exist, only when it exist for others. The patriarchs of faithβ€”from Paul the Apostle, who fiercely argued against antinomianism (the idea that grace allows us to sin freely), to the early Church fathers, the Reformers, and modern martyrs like Bonhoefferβ€”unanimously understood that grace transforms the recipient. When Hyper-Grace teachers claim that the Holy Spirit never convicts a believer of sin, or that holy living is an organic byproduct that requires no conscious effort or "striving," (once saved, always saved), they dilute the grit of Christian history. Bonhoeffer did not oppose the Nazi regime from an abstract theological tower. He lived his theology. He ran an illegal underground seminary at Finkenwalde, joined the resistance, and was ultimately hanged at FlossenbΓΌrg concentration camp in 1945. His life was the ultimate receipt for his theology: his grace cost him everything. Hyper-grace teaches that Christ died so that we don't have to suffer or change. Bonhoeffer teaches that Christ died so that we can finally have the power to die to ourselves and truly live.
