I have tracked Canadian antisemitism since learning about Concordia in 2010. Canada has been done for years. This is what I wrote after the recent election. I would start making plans to leave since there is no future there. xitter.cf/zachlewis3187/status/1…
What Canada's Election Results mean for Jews in the Diaspora globally:
For over the last 18 months, violence against Jews under the leadership of the Liberal government has been parabolic. Schools have been shot at, synagogues have had their windows broken, Jewish owned shops have been destroyed, and protesters have marched through Jewish neighborhoods as a means to intimidate the community. Granted, the same can be said in many countries like Australia, France, the UK, the USA, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, and so on.
Even with all of this, the issue of antisemitism was moot. In Canada, antisemitic attacks jumped 124% from 2022 to 2024. Quantitatively, there were 6,219 incidents in 2024. That means 1 attack for every 64 Jews in the country. This was not even a footnote factor for the election in Canada. It was brought up fleetingly by both parties. In effect, a mandate was given to the Liberal party to continue turning a blind eye to antisemitism...an issue that Prime Minister Carney did not even mention once during the campaign.
The reality is that Jewish issues, and more or less the importance of antisemitism, is proving to be a tangential to non-issue at best, to a negative impact issue for a party, at worst, in deciding elections. With Australia's election set for May 3rd, and with the Labor Party polling far ahead, there is a real possibility that we are going to see just how powerless the Jewish diaspora is in many liberal democracies.
The sad truth is that the demographics are not there. Jews are a minuscule percentage of the population in every country where we reside and hold very little power in deciding elections outside of our local municipalities anymore, even in the US. The issues that concern us, chiefly antisemitism, the relationship to Israel, and so on, do not move the needle on elections.
Jewish leadership needs to start recognizing that the integration of Jewish issues into the fabric of politics is not working. Unless and until we recognize that we are too small a community everywhere to be divided anywhere, we will become even less relevant. I do not foresee this current crop of Jewish leadership recognizing this, and as such, I think we are going to become irrelevant.
To that end, I believe that the diaspora is facing a crisis unlike any faced since the end of World War II. Liberal democracies have moved away from a society that champions a strict set of morals, for example, standing up to antisemitism irrespective of political leaning, to one that champions election victories over all else. Number one target in that? Us.
What happened last night in Canada, which Australia will mirror on May 3rd, is a clear indication of the state of the Jewish diaspora and where it is heading. For Israel, it is also a telling sign of the decade to come as it pertains to relations with western nations.
As Rabbi Hillel once said, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?" It is time that we in the Jewish diaspora start recognizing that until we advocate for ourselves and not for specific political parties, we will see the continuation of this seemingly unstoppable antisemitism. More pessimistically, even if we do start standing together, it might not matter.

CBC’s own former Ombudsman said in a ruling a journalist’s lived experience can “rest comfortably within journalistic standards.” So explain this: Neil Herland @NEWSneil attended a Yom Kippur service, he documented what he encountered. He talked about his lived experience. Now he’s under investigation, ripped off the air. The double standard is appalling. Neil is a friend, as is the journalist the Ombudsman ruled on. @NEWSneil was one of the first to reach out to me when I called @CBC out. I won't forget that. @CBC has spent years plastering “diversity” and “lived experience” on billboards, in commercials and throughout its corporate messaging. That isn’t a principle you get to switch off when it becomes uncomfortable. @NEWSneil belongs back on the air. I hope the union is fighting like hell for him, but I doubt it. Simple Question: how many dumpster fires🔥 at our public broadcaster do we have to witness before something is done @MarcMillerVM?

A Jewish journalist goes to Yom Kippur services in Toronto and films protesters shouting “baby killer” at people arriving to pray. His employer reportedly takes him off the air and summons him to a disciplinary hearing.
If CBC punished Neil Herland for documenting that intimidation, its management should be ashamed. What a cowardly response from a public broadcaster that ought to defend its journalists’ ability to report what they witness.
An activist complaint deserves scrutiny. So does the footage. Giving the complainants an effective veto over a journalist’s account would be an appalling surrender of editorial judgment.
CBC told Juno News that reports contain errors and mischaracterizations, while declining to specify them, citing employee privacy. That leaves serious questions unanswered.
Jewish journalists have every right to describe the hostility they encounter. CBC owes Canadians a clear explanation of what happened and which rule Herland allegedly broke.

The hope for peace in the Middle East? Or the factual account of what we can plainly see is happening?
