Ministerial responsibilities @DWPgovuk now published... and for first time in 25 years(?) we've separate Ministers for Employment and Social Security! Good news in my view - both priorities, and two great appts in @Alison_McGovern and @stephenctimms 🧵 gov.uk/government/organisati…

Great work we really need reform for the 21st century and longer working lives
Big news! We've launch a new Commission on Future of Employment Support and want to hear from you. TL;DR: - UK among weakest jobs recoveries in world - Bad for growth and living standards - We were already very unequal - Not enough people get the right help - We can do better...

This is a really important issue which not going away any time soon
The latest ONS Labour Market statistics show that employment rates for 50-64 year olds continue to lag behind the levels they were before the pandemic. ageing-better.org.uk/news/ol…

Interesting questions from @Emilyishness what do we think?
If these “Returnerships” really are the Gvt’s main offer on 50+ employment in this Budget, then I have some questions. They boil down to: 🤷‍♀️Why would inactive 50+ do them? 🤷‍♀️Will they address any common 50+ barriers to work? 🤷‍♀️What…are they? More specifically 🧵:

I ASK EVERYONE WHO SEES THIS TWEET TO PLEASE RT IT. Tomorrow nurses strike. They will be put through hell by the media, politicians and the establishment. Ahead of the action please share this tweet if you back the nurses and find it sickening that they are being vilified.

We need to 'accept and normalise working lives extending into 60s and 70s' says @KimChaplain @Ageing_Better. This requires multifaceted approach including pensions policy, employer attitudes, and making lifelong learning a reality for more. #EmpSkills22
Something that is urgently needed. We all need to engage

Excellent discussion at the DWP select committee yesterday. The suggestion to redeploy the Restart underspend to reach out to those not currently engaged in the labour market should not be ignored parliamentlive.tv/Download/I…

Really great evidence on why sanctions are not an incentive and the regime needs to be looked urgently
I think our sanctions system has gone very badly wrong. As @EleanorCarter also put it, it's also one of the most punitive regimes in the world with the severity of the penalties causing significant harm to people and families affected.

Very insightful summary as ever
Today's jobs figures, thread below! TL;DR: Good-ish news on pay and unemployment, but being driven by labour shortages post-Covid/ Brexit and risks even higher inflation. So we need action to boost labour supply, growth and incomes - not just dampen demand thru interest rates 1/

Time to rethink the response. Older workers need to feel wanted by the labour market, they are definitely needed but at the moment it feels like they are not first pick. Why do we continue to overlook the group and then cite a problem. This has been on the cards for months.
Today's jobs figures are pretty poor again. Even clearer now that single biggest challenge is how we help older people back into work. Below shows change in 'economic inactivity' since pandemic. Incredibly, *80%* of growth is over 50s - up by 560k. Flat/ falling for all others 1/

I travelled with hope for the past year that we were seeing real progress on the approach to employment support but I feel we may be seeing a step back, if indeed there ever really was a step forward.
My heart sinks when I hear Ministers/ Prime Minister talk about campaigns to "get people off welfare and into work". I've two problems with it. First is language, which Catherine put much better than I could in the excellent @CovidRealities project: covidrealities.org/learnings… 1/

Key story in @ONS labour market stats in recent months is the "missing million" (@tonywilsonIES). Unemployment is low, but more are becoming "economically inactive", i.e. out of work & not applying for work. Important to communicate this to public rather than "low unemployment"
Replying to @tonywilsonIES
And the labour market was growing, through thick and thin, pre-crisis. So it's smaller than it was, but even smaller than it *would have been*. We estimate that this 'participation gap' is now 1.0 million. I am really surprised and concerned that it's not narrowed today 3/

One of the big uncertainties about the pandemic's effect on the size of the UK population, and its labour market specifically, was migration. Just how many people left (and entered) the UK after Covid-19 hit. And was there a mass exodus of EU workers?

Disappointing today on jobs and skills, with no help for the thousands of firms struggling to recruit nor the millions off work due to ill health and caring. The recruitment and participation crisis continues... Quick comment from me below

I was hoping to see a bit more of the finesse behind the promise of £500m to help get people back to work in today's budget. I am left largely disappointed. Where are the big ideas that are going to address skill shortages and the creativity we need to keep older workers in jobs?
