The Heritage American debate isn’t just about severing your connection to the American past.
The more sinister idea is that what you do today carries no inheritance forward.
Serve your country. Build something. Sacrifice. Endure. Die for it.
Then be told your descendants have no special claim to your story, no right to take pride in your sacrifice, no deeper connection because of what you gave.
Once you convince a people that inheritance, lineage, and posterity mean nothing, you’ve weakened one of the oldest reasons men sacrifice for a future they’ll never live to see.
That is fertile ground for any system that wants loyalty transferred from family and inheritance to the state.

On September 12, 1683, the Winged Hussars saved Christian Europe from being conquered by the Ottomans.
Vienna’s defenders had endured nearly two months of Ottoman siege. The city’s survival, and the future of Christian Europe was at stake.
Then the Winged Hussars arrived.
King Jan III Sobieski of Poland commanded a Christian relief army uniting Polish, Austrian and German forces. After hours of fighting, he unleashed one of the greatest cavalry charges in history, with Poland’s legendary Winged Hussars spearheading the assault.
The Ottoman lines broke. The siege was lifted. Vienna was saved.
The victory became a turning point in the struggle against Ottoman expansion.
Writing to Pope Innocent XI afterward, Sobieski gave the glory to God: “Venimus, vidimus, Deus vicit.”
“We came, we saw, God conquered.”

Either Jesus died for the sins of all, or he did not.
If he did, then salvation must in principle be available to all who freely accept Jesus. If salvation is only available to those whom God predestined from the beginning of the world, then it is not open to all. In that case, it makes no sense to say the Jesus died for the sins of all. This is the core problem with the Calvinist doctrine of predestination.

Satan is not opposed to good morals.
He is opposed to Jesus Christ.
A man can feed the hungry, keep his promises, pay his debts, and remain completely lost. Satan does not need to turn every man into a monster. He only needs to teach a respectable man that he has no need of a Savior.
The deception is that morality and salvation are not the same thing.
The men arguing with Christ in John 8 claimed Abraham as their father. They knew the law and trusted their religious standing. Jesus told them, “Ye are of your father the devil” (John 8:44).
Their problem was not that they lacked religion. Their religion had become a refuge from the Son of God standing in front of them.
Good works cannot do what the blood of Christ does.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)
You can be kind without Christ. You can be disciplined without the Holy Spirit. You can be respected by your neighbors and still refuse the King who made you.
Satan is perfectly content with morality that keeps a man from repentance.
He wants you trusting your record instead of Christ’s sacrifice, your discipline instead of God’s grace, and your reputation instead of the finished work of Jesus.
A repentant thief beside Christ had no religious résumé left to offer. The woman in Luke 7 was known only as “a sinner,” yet Christ told her, “Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”
The respectable man who rejects the Son is not safer than either of them.
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)
Your neighbors may call you good. Your church may call you faithful. Your own conscience may point to a clean record.
None of those voices can save you.
Satan does not have to make you wicked in public. He only has to keep you from bowing to Jesus Christ.
Stop trusting your morals to do the work of a Savior. Bring your sin, your goodness, your reputation, and your empty hands to Christ.
Only Jesus saves.

The congregation doesn't need your coffee joke.
They buried someone this week.
They're sitting in pews with divorce papers in their glovebox.
Kids who won't speak to them.
Test results they haven't opened.
They drove past three churches to hear you say something that costs you something.
So open the Book.
Forget the illustration you found on Google.
Skip the movie clip.
Kill the countdown timer on your outline.
Preach like a man possessed.
Preach like you'll answer for every wasted syllable.
Preach like their blood is on your hands.
Because it is.
The pulpit isn't a stage.

USA. Summer. It is 95 degrees outside, and I am shivering inside a sandwich shop.
I have discovered how Americans forge strong souls.
Outside, the sun is trying to kill everyone. Inside this small restaurant, it is winter. My breath does not fog, but it is thinking about it. A man near me is eating a cold sandwich while wearing a jacket. In summer. Indoors.
In Japan we would simply turn it down. Americans do not turn it down. And now I understand them better than they understand themselves.
This cold is not an accident. This cold is a gift.
The owner has built, inside his shop, a second season. He invites you in from the brutal heat and hands you the one thing the sun has denied you all day: a reason to be cold. To endure it is to be tempered. You walk in soft and sweating. You walk out sharp and clear, a slightly stronger person than you were.
So I did not complain. I removed my outer layer and offered it to the woman at the next table, who was hugging herself. She said, "Oh, no, I'm fine, thank you." She was not fine. Her lips were blue. But she, too, understood the training. She would not break first. I respected her deeply.
The owner asked if everything was okay.
"It is perfect," I said, through my teeth, which were chattering. "Thank you for the winter."
He said, "...I can turn the AC down if you want?"
I told him no. A man does not ask the mountain to be shorter.
I stayed two hours. I ordered a hot coffee to survive. Then a second one, to hold. By the end I could no longer feel my hands, but my spirit had never been clearer.
So now, on the hottest days, I seek out the coldest rooms. I sit. I shiver. I sharpen.
And when I finally step back out into the summer heat, and it wraps around me like a warm bath, I feel it.
Reborn.
A man who has survived the winter, in August, indoors, for the price of a sandwich.

The whole John Piper controversy is interesting to me.
The pietist Anabaptists say they don’t have saints like Roman Catholics, that they don’t worship men.
But if you say anything about Piper… “Touch not thine anointed! Crucify him!”
It actually seems like sinful idolatry when we worship heroes and totally overlook their sins. Piper has done some good; he’s also done MUCH evil. His kids are a mess. One son goes to Russ Moore church and the other is an atheist.
He cheerled Somalis in MN. He said he wouldn’t defend his wife from an assailant. He attacked Trump right before the election. He pushed Lecrae on white church people. And he built a Trojan horse to let feminism in—complementarianism. He compromised the church with leftist nonsense.
Oh I know, he also taught Calvinistic adjacent things. He talked about seashells. I get it.
Most people will worship him still. But know this: He held open the gates for the barbarians.
