Anthropologists have often assumed hunting was a male activity for hominin relatives. New research adds strong support to the data for female hunting dominance in bonobos. Is this a better model than the male-dominated chimpanzees for ancient hominins? johnhawks.net/p/woman-the-hu…

More from @WollatonHall -- I absolutely adore these old taxidermy diorama cases, with landscaping and background painting that merge to create the environment. Great cormorant, Eurasian bittern, Eurasian coot, Northern raven shown here. #birds #taxidermy #museums

A long-standing debate in anthropology concerns whether people in other societies wholeheartedly believe that magic is an effective technology. Drawing on recent work in political science and psychology, Levy et al. argue that this debate should consider whether informants’ reports are sincere and accurate. Levy at al. suggest that people in small-scale societies - and those in WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) societies too - may exhibit a range of attitudes to magic: wholehearted belief (and disbelief), a more symbolic attitude, and even no fixed attitude at all. hbes.com/who-really-believes…

Dolls are incredibly widespread but not universal cross-culturally. In addition to functioning as toys, dolls are commonly used for supernatural purposes to punish enemies, heal or protect, increase fertility, or embody spirits. New paper in EHB with @NachitaRosun.

The idea that #whales (cetaceans) are deeply nested within #Artiodactyla is well supported by molecular, fossil and anatomical data. Cetacea is part of Artiodactyla. Some molecular biologists have wrongly thought that this discovery warrants a renaming of Artiodactyla, and... 1/n

A reminder to folks: "warm-blooded" is a vernacular and a stereotype. It actually doesn't concern the particular body temperature per se. There are multiple components to thermal physiology: 1) Internally-generated (endothermy) vs. externally-sourced (ectothermy) heat 1/
