Half of bread sold in the UK contains at least two different pesticides, new government data has found.
This is a rise of 50% from last year, & a major increase over the past decade - @PAN_UK

“With the cost of living crisis forcing people to spend less on food, it’s vital that consumers can trust that relatively cheap products like bread won’t expose them to mixtures of chemicals." - @PAN_UK
@theresecoffey we need urgent action on to reduce pesticide use now.

Hmmm - new report signed by Bayer, Mars, McCain Foods, McDonald’s, Mondelez, Olam, PepsiCo, Waitrose and others.
Well if these companies changed buying practices, extractive business model, dumped their junk food marketing, etc we might get somewhere..

#Bees + other pollinating insects are in serious decline.
Latest assessment shows more than a third of hoverfly species face extinction due to #pesticides, insensitive farming, habitat loss.
Putting #hoverflies out of business will harm crop production.

Solar farms cover less than 0.1% of the UK's land area
See if you can spot them
(Our dataviz whizz @tomoprater added them to this non-geographically specific map infographic)

If I am wrong and @horton_official is right then this is a hill to die on.

The Environmental Land Management scheme, and especially its Local Nature and Landscape Recovery pillars, are the best hope we have of reversing the collapse of nature in this country. I cannot believe the government is seriously considering canning 5 years of hard work on this.
Replying to @horton_official
Anyway the current lay of the land is:
- the review comes out 27 oct
- LNR & LR (the ambitious nature recovery bits) for the chop
- minister refusing to rule out area based payments
- talk of payment for nothing (annual up to £10k) for small farmers to support growth

Seems like a good morning to quote UN Secretary General @antonioguterres: “New fossil fuel investment is moral & economic madness”. “Climate activists are sometimes depicted as dangerous radicals. But truly dangerous radicals are countries increasing production of fossil fuels”

In Brazil, during Bolsonaro’s gov, agribusiness companies met 278 times with government officials of MAPA to discuss the relaxation of rules for pesticides, the authorization for testing new substances directly in field trials (instead of labs)!

Stumbled upon this disturbing research from 2020: link.springer.com/article/10…
The authors quantify the global number of cases of Unintentional, Acute Pesticide Poisoning (UAPP) in farmers 1/3
Keith Tyrell retweeted
“Approximately 740,000 annual cases of UAPP were reported.. resulting from 7446 fatalities and 733,921 non-fatal cases. On this basis, we estimate that about 385 million cases of UAPP occur annually world-wide including around 11,000 fatalities." 2/3
Keith Tyrell retweeted
"Based on a worldwide farming population of approximately 860 million this means that about 44% of farmers are poisoned by pesticides every year.”
Wow. Seems like a good reason to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petit…

For 4 years when I was US Editor I went to endless Trump rallies where we’d be accused of being ‘enemies of the people’ - the ‘we’ were the media, but also ‘liberals’, civil servants, environmentalists, the swamp, the think tanks.
All felt a bit familiar in B’ham today

Polling commissioned by an array of groups shows that the British public - including Conservative voters - does not support the weakening of social and environmental protections. Indeed, 74% consider existing protections insufficient. unchecked.uk/wp-content/uplo… #CPC22
