The @Giants Devito Lock non issue unpacked: 1. Let's not forget that Jones was coming into the season with an ACL recovery, and nobody knew at that time if he would be ready. 2. If you remember, the giants wanted a vet in the room, and backups were getting paid and coming off the FA board quickly. 3. $5m for a backup is a nothing burger, so let's stop with the money being an issue, and it didn't hold them back from doing other fa business. 4. Let's not forget, the o-line last year when Devito played was terrible, and while he created some fun buzz around the team, there were some good, and some bad play from Devito last year. But he did throw the ball well when he took his shots. Remember, he was an undrafted fa, starting games yr1. 5. Lock had very limited playing time in training camp/preseason due to injury, and at that time, we were all wondering if Devito was going to be QB 2. 6. It was smart business to keep lock at #2 while Jones was the starter as Devito was a safe PS QB that wasn't going to get plucked. This was a way to keep 3 QBs without having to use 3 roster spots. 7. The giants offensive play calling this year I believe has been mostly good, with players wide open all over the place, but Jones just didn't execute and make easy NFL QB throws consistently. 8. Even with Thomas going down, the o-line is playing decently, and the QB still has had time to throw (outside of the eagles game) most of the games, so if I am Dabs, I have to be thinking any decent QB should be able to hit on more of the big play, wide open receiver routes. 9. The offense has a decent amount of QB rpo and runs built-in, and Devito can run, and he has no issue slinging it all over the field. 10. If lock had played throughout preseason, and demonstrated that he can run the offense, he would be playing, but he wasn't, and we have no idea if he will play well sooner than later. I also believe if the giants were in the playoff hunt, or even close to, they may have chosen lock, but they're not, and the team must think medium term what's best for the organization. 11. If Devito does a good job, even avg, then he can be the official backup and maybe a bridge when they bring in a rookie next year. He'll be a restricted FA (correct me if I am wrong), and that would be a huge advantage to have a rookie QB, a backup under control at a minimal contract amount, which will offset the Jones dead money next year. 12. We've been begging for the management and coaches to make smart tough business decisions, even if it meant a few get butthurt, and this is one of those moves. At first, I thought it should be lock, until I took a moment to evaluate the entire sitrep.
