PRESS RELEASE
LASTMA, EMERGENCY RESPONDERS EXTRICATE TWO SEVERELY BURNT VICTIMS AS DIESEL TANKER PLUNGES FROM OTEDOLA BRIDGE AND ENGULFS UNDERPASS IN FEROCIOUS INFERNO
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) today demonstrated its unwavering resolve to safeguard human lives and mitigate the devastating consequences of road traffic incidents following a harrowing occurrence in which a diesel-laden tanker plunged from Otedola Bridge and erupted into a ferocious inferno beneath the bridge.
The terrifying conflagration left two victims with extensive and severe burn injuries, necessitating their immediate extrication from the danger zone and urgent medical intervention.
In a demonstration of commendable alacrity, operational dexterity and unwavering commitment to humanitarian service, LASTMA's emergency response team, in concert with other relevant emergency management agencies, swiftly mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued the two severely burnt victims from the perilous situation.
The injured victims were subsequently evacuated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency's Rescue Unit (LRU) to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre, Toll-Gate, where they were admitted for immediate medical attention.
Meanwhile, operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were engaged in concerted firefighting operations to contain and extinguish the raging inferno, prevent its further escalation and avert additional casualties, as well as potential damage to surrounding infrastructure.
Other emergency and security agencies that participated in the coordinated rescue and containment operations included the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency's Rescue Unit (LRU), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (Neighbourhood Watch) and Police personnel from the Alausa Police Division.
The collective intervention of these agencies exemplified the indispensable significance of inter-agency synergy, operational coordination and rapid emergency mobilisation in managing high-risk incidents and preventing an already precarious situation from degenerating into a more catastrophic occurrence.
Commending the promptness, professionalism and commendable sense of duty demonstrated by the responding agencies, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki lauded the concerted efforts of all emergency responders whose timely intervention facilitated the rescue and evacuation of the injured victims while supporting ongoing efforts to contain the inferno.
The General Manager further expressed his heartfelt wishes for the swift and complete recovery of the two victims, reiterating the paramount importance of rapid emergency response, institutional collaboration and unwavering dedication to the preservation of human lives in the face of unforeseen road traffic incidents.
LASTMA reiterates its steadfast commitment to the enforcement of traffic regulations, efficient traffic management, prompt incident response and the strategic coordination of emergency operations across Lagos State.
The Authority consequently urges motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles to prioritise regular mechanical inspections, strict adherence to prescribed safety standards and responsible driving practices to minimise the occurrence of preventable road traffic disasters.

🚨 🗣️ Breaking: Ainsley Maitland-Niles on why he refused to take the knee before Everton vs Chelsea:
“Honestly, I feel like these gestures have become formalities. We take the knee before matches, cameras capture the moment, and everyone moves on. But what actually changes?
“I have experienced racism throughout my career, from my time at Arsenal to Lyon and now back at Everton. Yet I rarely see meaningful consequences for those responsible. How many more Black players must suffer before real action is taken?
“Behind every racist insult is a human being being humiliated for the colour of their skin. Imagine giving everything to football, entertaining millions, only to be reminded that some people still believe you are worth less because you are Black.
“I am tired of seeing beautiful messages against racism followed by the same ugly reality. Taking the knee means nothing if the people responsible face no consequences.
“I don’t want another photograph of players taking the knee. I want to see real punishment, real accountability and real change. Black players deserve to feel protected, respected and safe, not just for the 60 seconds before kick-off, but every single day.

“I think there is a 50–60% chance that Toluwanisings would still be alive today if he were in a country with good governance. With this Automated External Defibrillator (AED) I’m holding here, I have brought several people back to life. Each device costs over $2,000. Can our government use the money spent on campaign buses to purchase these devices and distribute them across the country? If you people like, continue selling your votes next year”

WORLD FOOD DAY: HUNGER IN NIGERIA, NOW A NATIONAL EMERGENCY
Yesterday, as the world marked International Rural Women’s Day, I joined Nigerian rural women who produce the food that sustains our population. What became clear to me is that hunger in the country must be declared a national emergency.
Today, as the world marks World Food Day, Nigerians are confronting a painful reality: hunger, poverty, and insecurity continue to affect millions of families across the country.
Nigeria is now one of the hungriest countries in the world, ranking 117th out of 125, down from 109th out of 125 in 2023, when the current administration came into office. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that about 36 million Nigerians will face acute hunger this year.
The tragedy is even more painful because Nigeria has vast, arable, and fertile land. Yet about 60% remains uncultivated, providing forest hideouts for terrorist organisations and other non-state actors.
On World Food Day, the message is clear: Nigerians deserve a country where no family goes to bed hungry, farmers can work without fear, and poverty and insecurity are confronted with urgency and compassion.
The fight against hunger must be treated as a national emergency.
Under our leadership, we will secure the country and return our hardworking farmers to their farms. They will receive targeted grants, subsidies, and other forms of support.
Together, we can build a Nigeria where no one goes to bed hungry and every farmer can work in peace and dignity. A New Nigeria is POssible.
Nigeria will be OK. -PO
