Tucson High coach Zach Neveleff’s players and coaches rallied around him in what has been a very emotional time for him since his mom passed away recently. Part of this week he was in Las Vegas to bring home his mom’s ashes after spreading some in Sedona. Tonight, on his birthday, the Badgers beat Buena dramatically 24-23 in overtime. Afterward, he held back tears when he thanked his players in a postgame huddle for their support for when he was away “to help my mom to her home.”

Walden Grove earns its third straight Copper Cup Trophy over crosstown rival Sahuarita with the convincing 33-6 victory. Walden Grove dominated in all areas. The Jace McGee-to-Jordan Dobson connection stole the show. Keep an eye on this Walden Grove team.

Walden Grove head coach Corey Noble says several returners have taken ownership of mistakes made down the stretch of a 52-46 loss to Phoenix Northwest Christian in the first round of the 4A state playoffs last season in which the Red Wolves surrendered a late 22-point lead.

Sahuarita head coach Jake Allen led the Mustangs to their first region title since 2013 in his first season leading the team. In year 3 of his tenure, after battling through injuries and a tough schedule last season, Allen believes the team is positioned to take the next step.

The ruling by the federal judge in Colorado technically means Arizona could bring back a number of athletes from various sports who finished their fourth year of eligibility in 2025-26

After I wrote a story about Judith donating a kidney and advocating for organ donations, she invited me to have coffee with her and she gave me two books about parenting. She knew I had a daughter and she was a single parent herself who raised her boys Joseph and John very well despite having modest means. She donated her kidney but she gave her heart to many in this community and we are grateful.

He’s come a long way and his baseball journey is continuing. Angel Armenta Jr. was on the 2019 Sunnyside Little League team that came a game away from reaching Williamsport, Pa. He is concluding his Walden Grove career as a Kino Baseball League All-Star and is now headed to Williston (N.D.) State College to further his baseball and academic career. He wants to get into sports medicine.

Awesome to see: respected coach Virgil Henderson, former head coach at Cholla, Rincon/University and Catalina, is the new running backs coach at Marana. Henderson has served as an assistant before at Sunnyside, Salpointe, Ironwood Ridge and Mountain View.

Arizona loses to Duke 9-4 in Game 7 after falling 8-6 to the Blue Devils in the previous game. Wildcats won the first two games at Durham, including a 10-1 win in five innings yesterday against the Blue Devils.
Everybody knows Caitlin Lowe is not signed beyond next season. Now comes the speculation of what will happen next with the Arizona softball program ahead. Recruits/transfers are watching.
