The status quo of global health has been disrupted by the Trump Admin - from USAID to WHO.
My latest in @RCPolitics outlines 3 opportunities for the Admin to build something bolder, more impactful, & long lasting:

🚨 NEW: Restore Childhood just funded peer-reviewed research that improves upon the @FDA's own benefit-risk analysis of the Moderna mRNA COVID vaccine.
The finding? For 18–25-year-old males, vaccine risks outweighed benefits relative to hospitalizations.
Here's what made this study different, and why it matters:
✅ Incorporated benefits from prior COVID infection ✅ Used data stratified by age AND sex
✅ Multidisciplinary team: 2 mathematicians, a clinician, epidemiologist, immunologist & bioethicist
This is what proper evidence-based medicine looks like.
The team: mathematician Paul Bourdon, PhD, @KrugAlli @KevinBardosh, and RC board member Ram Duriseti, MD, PhD.
Recently published. Peer-reviewed. Bias-free. Unfunded by industry.
This is the kind of research our children deserve, and exactly why @Rstorechildhood exists.

Our new paper in @Vaccines_MDPI reanalyzes the FDA's benefit-risk assessment of Moderna's mRNA-1273 COVID vaccine (orig formulation). We focus on hospitalizations—those prevented by vaccination vs. those caused by vaccine-attibutable myocarditis/pericarditis (VAM/P). We incorporate benefits from prior COVID infection—something the FDA overlooked. Our analysis is restricted to males 18-25 (those at highest VAM/P risk).

Congratulations to @KrugAlli @KevinBardosh and co-authors on this detailed reassessment of benefit-risk of one covid shot in young men with inclusion of additional variables. Clinical decisionmaking when absolute benefits and risk are both very small is one of the most challenging in medicine. Look forward to seeing more of your great work!

I’ve wanted to read Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being for 20 years. Finally came to it: One of the most incredible poetic plays on the themes of “lightness and weight” in human relationships - of freedom and responsibility, of the incomprehensibility of others.
A new breakthrough HIV therapy that promises to end AIDS deaths from multi-drug resistance is up for accelerated clinical development and regulatory approval at the FDA today.

A new Scientific Reports paper by @BMuellerSN et al. fundamentally challenges early claims that #COVID #lockdowns in #Germany “clearly saved lives.” By applying multiple competing statistical models instead of a single favored one, the authors show that uncertainty was massively underestimated in earlier analyses.

Alzheimer’s affects 7M Americans, costing $1 Trillion/yr & devastating families.
My latest in @dcexaminer proposes an OWS-like model to speed-up drug development and slash trillion-dollar costs.
Bold leadership from Trump Admin can do it.

Alzheimer’s is the most feared and costly disease in America, affecting 7M (14M by 2050)
A new model for drug development is urgently needed
Will Trump fix it?

As a physician, scientist, & faculty member, I have been careful about speaking about hot button issues
I spoke out during COVID about myocarditis & other issues
I felt compelled to weigh in on the divide between academic elites vs science & public opinion on gender affirming care among minors

Starting 2026 by finishing a biography of Benjamin Franklin by @WalterIsaacson. I had no idea the guy was this hilarious & clever, especially his witty satirical propaganda. And his diplomatic skills (lol) playing the French/English off each other in the 1783 peace treaty -masterful (although America did not in the end acquire Canada, despite Franklin’s attempt).
My new Op-Ed in @baltimoresun
“America has a medical bureaucracy problem that is disincentivizing the next generation of prevention technologies for chronic disease.”

Wow. This is an even more modest change than I had been led to believe. Why are public health experts' hair on fire over this? What is wrong with individualized shared decision-making, as we do in every other domain of medicine?
