All terrible AR experiences begin the same way:
The creative person looks at the dev & asks "So what can we do?"
8+ years in XR, I can honestly say, most AR experiences are terribly designed & provide a poor end-user experience.
It's not a simple problem to solve ...🧵

Working on an AR experience with a VFX artist friend; while discussing the user flow, we got to the topic of design principles.
From the nuances of intuitive interaction to ensuring consistency & managing cognitive load, there's a lot to unpack in the world of AR design.

For generative AI to become an interesting art tool, we need much more control over the output. The slot-machine-like nature of pure text-to-image leaves too much to chance.
Using the "Real-time Latent Consistency Model" that I'm using in the example here, is the first time I truly got a glimpse of a future where we'll be able to use our artistic skills and sensibility, to get control over AI image gen.
Systems like these will never be able to match the quality or originality of a skilled artist, it won't surprise us in the same way an artist can.
Things are a mess in terms of the training data these models are based on, and the questions about copyright concerns and about a time when everything will look the same are very valid.
At some point capabilities like these will be embedded in photoshop, and anyone will be able to generate a pretty picture. But to create interesting designs, to tell original stories and to surprise us, we need creatives and artists with something on their mind. We'll be able to create immersive worlds, by making brush-strokes and sculpt marks, without needing to worry about all the dials, plugins, wires of our 3d and 2d tools today.
I love to sculpt, I love to draw, and I love to explore new mediums and new ways to create. The Gen AI tools we have today are far from perfect, and things need to be steered in a better direction. For that we need artists to help point the way. Gen AI isn't going away.. it's too powerful and has the potential to allow us to tell stories like never before. Like all other big technological shifts, tech like this will come at a cost, but it will also open up new opportunities and empower a new generation of storytellers.
I might be naive, but I believe that human ingenuity and creativity will persevere in this new world ♥️

VFX digital doubles are not the same as AI! These definitions are alarming! Every single action film post-2000 has some kind of VFX digital double. – at Richmond, London

This is the video AI Haters tried to cancel, created by Martin Nebelong, who has just given me permission to republish it.
He felt compelled to remove it due to the incredible amount of bullying he was receiving. In his words: "The amount of hate, negativity, and fear was staggering, and I didn't want to defend myself against that."
Nothing outrages me more me more than the "cancel culture" and the unfair pressures on creators who are simply using AI tools and showing the world how they can learn these new creative processes.
His video is amazing. It shows how Generative AI nowadays is much more than "just writing a prompt". And how it will enable artists and designers to experiment in countless new ways.
Remember that it's not that artists/designers hate AI! AI Haters are just a small group of people and they don't speak for all artists. In fact, I know many more artists and designers who already use it daily. But they just don't make noise: they focus on learning and creating.
Martin, you, and any other creator using AI, has all my support!

Adobe is entering the image-to-3D game!
Their new method, LRM, can create high-fidelity 3D meshes from a single image in just 5 seconds 🔥
It's trained on 1 million objects and is able to generate objects from real-world images and generative AI models.
