We mourn the passing away of Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, one of India's most distinguished leaders. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and served in various government positions, including as Finance Minister, implementing economic reforms that helped India rise from the 1991 crisis. As Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve the lives of Indian citizens and further liberalize the economy. His contributions also extended to strengthening India-Sri Lanka relations, fostering friendship and cooperation between our nations. His legacy will inspire generations to come. In Sri Lanka, we have seen time and again how certain trade unions, backed by leftist political parties, have hindered progress by resisting necessary reforms and changes. While trade unions are crucial for protecting employee rights and ensuring fair treatment, it's concerning when they become instruments of political agendas rather than serving the true interests of the workers.
The recent statement by an NPP candidate about dissolving unions attached to the party raises serious questions. What’s the rationale behind dissolving these unions once in power? Are these unions being used as pawns only for political leverage? Unions should represent the workforce's welfare, not become obstacles to development or tools for unrest.
It's time for unions to evolve in Sri Lanka. They should stand for positive change, fair practices, and the advancement of workers' rights, without falling into the traps of outdated ideologies that keep our country from moving forward.
