Barley, our farm manager in training, will not miss a sunset. Every evening when the sun hits 7degrees and lights the sky with a deep yellow he wanders off. At first we leashed him. Koby would chase after him. Now when Barley moves to the west we sit still with him. Until the sun falls to 18degrees and the sky turns to amber. Heaven certainly must be a Kentucky kind of place.

All the older successful farmers at the coffee shop who say “it was tough but buying that farm was the best thing I ever did” remind me of this diagram. You only hear from the ones who made it. You don’t hear from the one who committed suicide in the barn after he couldn’t make a payment. Or the one who added so much stress to his life his marriage crumbled. Or the one who not only lost the newly purchased farm, but also dad’s original quarter. Planning on future inflation, and more “good times ahead” is nothing but pure speculation. Farmland prices have nothing to do with the lands actual production value. It’s all propped up by crop insurance, speculation, ethanolc etc. I think at some point this bubble pops. The board needs a reset

I’ve always admired this operation. Saw them doing morning maintenance on my way north and had to stop in to meet them. He said their newest tractor is a 40 series Deere. They also have a 6620 that stays in corn that their dad runs. I won’t share the number of acres he told me they cover, but it’s very impressive for the size of fleet they run. “We pay cash for what other people consider junk, and we’re fairly good mechanics” I doubt they stress when beans are $9 and corn is $4!

Huge shout out to Samuel for completing one of his personal goals he set this year to run a marathon! I’m always inspired by the personal growth our team sets for themselves, the hard work they put in at the farm and in their personal lives. Then watching them accomplish those goals is truly rewarding. Congratulations to Samuel!

Building systems that serve our community is a core thesis at Affinity Farms. Taking risks are never easy especially in today’s economy, but some are necessary. Big news coming this week!!

perfectsundaystv.com/watch BLOT: Promo code PerfectAF Perfect Sundays is now streaming! In the 1950s 15% of America’s population were farmers. Today it’s less than 2%. Put plainly America’s farm population share has shrunk nearly 90% since 1950. From 1 in 7 Americans to fewer than 1 in 50. Less than 2% responsible for feeding Americans and the wider world. That’s a heavy burden. Consolidation, price degradation, inflation and the weight of carrying the farm business to the next generation creates an unbearable environment. But inside all of that we find hope. Perfect Sundays is an incredible 6 episode tv series about a farm family shaken by tragedy of that weight, but finds hope and a path to rebuild something the community needs and a place the next generation wants to come home to. Perfect Sundays is streaming now and you can stream all 6 episodes today. Promo code: PerfectAF

BLOT Joshua 1:9 Dale’s calls were always appropriately timed, often while frustrated, flying too high or stuck in thought. He always found a way of making sense of the moment you were in. So much work done, but none left undone. Only passed on to those he inspired and commissioned it to be carried. You fought for all of us in Ag, Dale. You finished the race. Your life will echo in each of us “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged; for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Incredible excursion to Germany learning about Rye. This crop plays such a fundamental role on our farm as we continue to build out supply solutions for our local distilleries in Kentucky. Cannot thank the researchers and farmers in Germany enough for the open and candid conversation about growing this crop. So much to implement and change as we prepare for our 2027 crop!

Happy Independence Day! My family settled this place in Kentucky in 1781 with a land grant Samuel Pottinger received for his service in the revolutionary war. We started working enterprises to build a community in 1788. The last 7 generations on this land we have seen and been a part of this American experiment. Every generation stepping up to answer the call for our country. Post world wars we thought the world would eat itself alive. American policy directed farmers to step up to the plate. And they did. America became the world’s bread basket. My dad answered the call that so many American farmers participated in. The ones farming today survived the ‘80s farm crisis, ‘90s consolidation. They fed the world. It came at a cost as most all rallying policies can do. This one is felt in the heartbeat of all Americans. We saw our rural towns hollowed out as we built up communities around the world. It’s not a criticism, it’s a price that we paid. The world is fed and now that demographics are leveling we are turning our attention here in this 8th generation at AF back to our community. As the farm has done some many times over the last 245 years we are adapting to the needs of the people around us. We are so excited to announce these projects in the coming weeks and months. We are drawing on our past to guide our future growth, not by looking back with nostalgia, but by planting forward with purpose. To reenergize the American spirit in our community and give a rebirth rural towns across the country. Have a happy and safe 4th of July, celebrate America’s 250 years! Cheers!

We are finally into the rye! Repeated flash floods have us out of the bottom ground and assessing crop damage- more to come on that. That means Geneva is chasing the combine punching double crop #soybeans.
