Adding the background gives the portrait an immediate sense of realism, which is what I'm trying to achive. Now i will start to refine the facial features and add detail and values.

Using a light pencil with just suggestive marks, allows me plenty room to make adjustments as I move around the portrait. I'm being careful to work the portrait evenly and not get fixed on any one spot.
