You can now use BTC for a U.S. home down payment without selling it.
@betrmortgage lets you pledge BTC and use part of its value toward the down payment, while the rest of the purchase goes through a standard mortgage.
A few details on how it works:
โ $250K in BTC can support a $100K down payment
โ BTC price drops donโt trigger margin calls or require additional collateral
โ Better holds the BTC in custody through @coinbase
โ The BTC is returned once the down-payment loan is repaid
Just know that Better can liquidate the BTC after 60 days of missed payments.
So in practice, youโre still taking a normal mortgage. The BTC is just helping cover the down payment without forcing you to sell it.
One trade-off: every $1 of down-payment credit requires $2.50 in BTC.
I can see the appeal if you want to keep your BTC exposure while buying a home.
Crypto-backed mortgages have moved in.
Borrowers in the US can now use Bitcoin as collateral for a down payment - without having to sell it or face margin calls.
Plus, Coinbase One members can get up to $10,000 back at closing.
