Urging elderly people to remain in the safety of their home is pointless advice for the 7,940 Australians aged over 65 who are homeless every night. Whether they're couchsurfing, in rooming houses, or in overcrowded homes, they're highly vulnerable to #CVD19. #HomelessCantIsolate
I met this remarkable woman Hilary Chapple when visiting Edmonton recently. Well done to her continued targeted advocacy in this area and her ongoing work in ending elder homelessness.

Inside these boxes live aged homeless Japanese citizens. I heard the Government's homeless street count is done in daylight when the boxes are gone hence a very low count of those sleeping outside.
The homemade lolly bags were an absolute hit. Every face I saw that night was old
The article below highlighted in Japan the work this small voluntary group does fortnightly on a Saturday night in Tokyo's streets & parks. Predominantly older people living in cardboard boxes so grateful for the friendly faces, bananas, tobacco & soup.

After 10 weeks travelling, my final stop in Tokyo was to join the inspiring Sulejman Brkic founder of the Tokyo Spring Homeless Patrol. I urge anyone interested in knowing more about Tokyo's ageing homeless population, planning a visit or happy to help out to do so via Facebook
Cambridge Cyrenians are an amazing homeless service responding to their local community. I loved that their staff team is housed next door to their older residents in an old pub, now a home. The staff of the older homeless service are extraordinary. Thanks Val for a great tour!
It was great to visit the wonderful UK city of Cambridge to meet the team @CamCyrenians. Kristian & colleagues showed me several diverse programs from mental health nursing, post release support, supported housing & their specialisist care for older homeless people in their city
I asked Dr Maureen Crane for advice before my visit to London as she is one of the UK’s leading researchers on homelessness. She pioneered UK research into older homelessness & for years has studied homeless people of all ages. Her work has had a major impact on policy & practice
Edward Alsop staff introduced me to the terminology psychologically informed care environment. I really like this description when coming from an age care sector that is often dominated by complex clinical frameworks. People's skills strengths & aspirations are key not just needs
Fascinating research coming out of the University of California led by Margot Kushel on seniors experiencing homelessness. Harm does accumulate.
“The longer we leave people out there, the more these harms accumulate,” says @MKushel:

Just a stone's throw from Downing Street & Westminster is Look Ahead's Edward Alsop House. Andreas Head of Operations kindly showed me this 79 bed homeless service for older men that since 2016 has supported 6500 people annually. Thanks to the staff & residents @lookaheadtweets
Thames Reach hostels provide specialist support & accommodation to former rough sleepers. Manager Nancy of Robertson St runs a hostel for 42 men & women aged 40+. Staff work on the physical & mental health problems that residents face. Dignity & safety are a priority @ThamesReach
