10 years ago: 0%. Today: 73%.
When Dyslexia Canada was founded in 2016, no province or territory required evidence-based reading screening in schools.
This fall, 73% of K–2 students, or 800,000+ children, will be screened.
We’ve come a long way. And we’re not done yet. ❤️

🎯 Nidhi describes developing teaching expertise as a moral imperative. The stakes are high because effective teaching has a profound impact on students' lives, especially struggling students. A very moving clip!
Fantastic insights from the Yukon First Nations School Board. Melissa’s voice is a powerful one!💪🏽

Melissa and Kayla share FNSB’s journey from balanced literacy to structured literacy, the importance of screening and assessment data, transparent communication with families, and the ways local cultures, languages, and communities are reflected in literacy learning.

Problem solving matters, but so does the sequencing. Start by building knowledge and fluency. Starting with problem solving is likely to be ineffective if students don't have the tools to be successful.

Can we please stop talking about "summer learning loss"? If students had in fact learned something, then what we are seeing is a reduction of retrieval strength. Storage strength is very unlikely to be affected, and our teaching strategies should reflect this.
Student assessment is part of a child's educational story and identity. Parents should have timely access to this information so they can support their child's growth and understand how it may influence future learning opportunities. #BCEd
Are we being honest with parents about how their children are doing?
In my latest conversation with Rachel Canter, we discuss why schools shouldn't be afraid to tell parents the truth about student progress and why honest reporting is essential to helping children succeed.

The healthiest professional cultures are those in which educators can question long-held assumptions, change their minds without losing the respect of their colleagues, & see intellectual humility as a sign of professional strength rather than weakness.

Powerful food for thought here. Time for those of us in teacher ed to turn a critical lens on our practices & engage in deep reflection about what we need to learn, de-implement & shift.

I wrote about this in a 2023 blogpost. I was astounded at the pushback from people wanting to blame parents for children’s reading difficulties 🤷🏻♀️

Professional growth begins with reflection. This article is a timely reminder for BC educators (and beyond) that evidence informs our practice, but self-reflection is what turns knowledge into meaningful change.

This is a fabulous episode but you need to suspend your frustration and disbelief about the mindsets that allowed Mississippi children to underachieve for so long, simply on the basis that they were poor. The Mississippi story shows conclusively that it’s instructional rigour not post/zip-codes that should determine students’ success at school.

Parents can't advocate for their children in school if they don't know there's a problem.
In this clip, Rachel Canter explains why keeping parents informed was a key part of Mississippi's literacy reforms.

Effective literacy instruction doesn’t rely on a single body of research. It’s built on the science of reading, learning, teaching, and implementation—working together to turn evidence into real classroom practice.

"If a medical school knowingly taught future physicians treatments that had been disproven decades ago, we would not call it academic freedom. We would call it malpractice. Yet in teacher preparation, programs can continue teaching methods that contradict the best available evidence"
This excellent article by @HeatherPeske focusses on reading, but the same is happening (maybe even worse) in math education. nctq.org/research-insights/w…
