Russian information operations are often misunderstood as simply "pro-Russia propaganda".
Modern Kremlin-linked influence campaigns are usually less about persuading people to support Russia directly, and more about weakening social cohesion inside rival societies.
The objective is fragmentation:
• reduce trust in institutions
• increase hostility between and within groups
• amplify cynicism
• exhaust democratic consensus
• and turn political disagreement into identity warfare
Importantly, these operations rarely invent divisions from nothing.
They exploit fractures that already exist.

‼️ BREAKING: A ShinyHunters suspect known as 'Umbreon', aka Pepijn van der Stap, was arrested a couple of weeks ago, according to Krebs.
He's a 23-year-old convicted Dutch hacker who was on parole and detained again around September 16 on suspicion of aiding ShinyHunters data thefts and extortions.
Days later, ShinyHunters claimed a hack of the FBI's jobs site and left an Umbreon defacement that sources say was likely a rival's attempt to pin it on him.

Over the last several days I have collected a large number of Canadian accounts posting variations of:
"I’m Canadian and Russia is not my enemy".
On its own, that proves very little. People are entitled to hold that opinion.
What makes this worth investigating is the ecosystem surrounding it.
The same slogan is appearing across multiple countries, being amplified by Russian and pro-Russian accounts, and in Canada it is repeatedly being connected to anti-Ottawa sentiment, NATO, Ukraine, QAnon-style conspiracies, culture-war issues and, increasingly, Alberta separatism.
That matters because Canada’s own intelligence service describes Russia as a sophisticated foreign-interference actor which exploits pre-existing controversial issues, using social media and networks of proxies and sympathetic or opportunistically aligned influencers.
This thread looks at the network, not merely the slogan.

ADDENDUM 10 - A necessary warning about attribution
Finding someone repeating Kremlin-friendly narratives does not establish that they work for Russia.
Canadian researchers examining the Tenet fallout made exactly this methodological point: high-volume political activity or suspicious-looking amplification cannot automatically be classified as bots or manufactured coordination without supporting evidence.

That distinction is essential here.
State asset → coordinated amplifier → ideological fellow traveller → ordinary person repeating a viral meme are not the same thing.
An effective influence ecosystem can contain all four.
