Fabulous Conference. So good to be back in person, too.

A recent study in @JDementiaCare shows a ‘hidden population’ of 70,800 people in the UK who are currently living with #YoungOnsetDementia - a rise of 69% since 2014. This #WorldAlzheimersMonth, we are calling for better age-appropriate services and care: dementiauk.org/new-figures-a…

What can we learn from the death of the #Queen?
The world has watched her live through the process of #OrdinaryDying, and yet dying went unspoken, un-named.
Let's notice what nobody mentioned: we all saw the Queen going through the stages of ordinary dying.

Glad to be working with Dan Thompson, well done on another publication on the CAIT project in dementia care
Really important study
Our @AlzSocResearch funded study exploring the experiences of psychotherapy for people with #dementia & their families launches today!

ALT The picture provides an overview of the study 'Exploring the experiences of psychotherapeutic interventions for people with dementia and their families'. We hope to find out what kind of talking therapies are being delivered in the UK, who they are being delivered to, how people access these, and what (if any) difference they make. We will be asking people with dementia, their families & therapists to tell us about their experiences. We will use this information to develop guidance for people with dementia & create a list of key skills for therapists.

Well done to Hester Bowers from the DClinPsy @TeesPsych for her contribution to the national Faculty for the Psychology of Older People conference @FPOP_2022 presenting preliminary findings of her small scale research project. Brilliant accomplishment for a first placement 👏
Privileged to present @FPOP_2022 with @AndyDetective from @PlaylistforLife on how Durham and Darlington Care Home Liaison team from @TEWV have turned inspiration into action, overcoming practical barriers to prescribing non-pharmacological interventions to meet resident's needs
Arousal graph presented #FPOP_2022 conference. It is important we provide guidance on dealing with high levels of stress and distress in dementia care. We should not collude with care homes who claim they can provide care without using some form of restrictive practices.

A top paper from our BtC guidelines lit search. This 2022 'review of systematic reviews' finds 3 consistently effective interventions for management of 'agitation': improving staff communication skills, person-centred care & DCM with supervision. Quality interactions are key!

National BtC guidelines looking at evidence re training care home staff in use of formulations. Unfortunately little evidence of sustained use even after good training - see why below. Similar reasons for limited use of DCM in care homes. So if not supported, don’t teach!??

Asking the same question, over and over again. It’s not called getting old, it’s called getting ill.
