BAIL DENIED Sibiya has been denied bail. He will be back in court on 24 November 2026 for further investigation. "He destroyed evidence, threatened the victims, threatened to wipe off Mr. M's family, including the 16 year old victim". There was no way he would get bail! #Sibiya

Frightening
Multiple people tried to break into South Africa's Constitutional Court today with pangas (machetes) because they disliked a court ruling on the rights of asylum-seekers. On the same day when the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to a South African for upholding international law.

Donald Trump will be even madder. A South African received something he so badly wanted: the Nobel Peace Prize this morning. Congratulations, Navi Pillay! South Africa's 5th Peace Prize.

Let me walk you through what actually happened. The Constitutional Court made a ruling. Scalabrini Centre v Minister of Home Affairs, 7 July 2026. Four sections of the Refugees Act struck down. What those sections did: they let officials exclude asylum seekers on procedural grounds. How you entered. Whether you had a transit visa. Whether you delayed. Before your claim was even heard. The Court said that conflicts with non-refoulement. You cannot turn someone away at the gate without considering whether they will be harmed if sent back. That is the ruling. Technical. Narrow. Grounded in law South Africa has had since 1998. Now, here is what happened next. Someone took that ruling and made it sound like something else. AI-generated images of Helen Zille and Leon Schreiber "welcoming asylum seekers." Claims that the judgment grants citizenship. Claims that it legalises all foreign nationals. None of it is true. But it does not need to be true. It needs to travel. And it did. The Department of Home Affairs issued a statement today. Real. Not fake. They say they fought the case. They lost. They are implementing a binding Constitutional Court order. They are also referring what they call a coordinated disinformation campaign to the IEC. Here is the thing. This is happening about a month before local elections. The IEC has a new Code of Conduct on Countering Disinformation. Home Affairs is using it. Whether it works is a separate question. But think about the incentive structure. A Constitutional Court ruling on refugee rights is nuanced. It does not fit in a WhatsApp forward. It does not fit on a meme. But "Court forces government to give foreigners citizenship" fits everywhere. The person who created those AI images knows exactly what they are doing. They do not need you to believe it. They need you to share it. And the Department's response, a formal statement, a referral to the IEC, is correct. It is also slow. By the time the correction arrives, the damage is done. There is a deeper layer here. The Scalabrini Centre judgment is about procedural fairness. It says: before you exclude someone, hear their claim. That is not controversial in law. It is, however, explosive in politics. Because the anxiety is real. Unemployment. Service delivery pressure. Competition for resources. The Constitutional Court did not create that anxiety. But a well-timed piece of disinformation can aim it at a target. Foreign nationals are an easier target than a Court judgment. The uncomfortable truth. This is not the first time a technical ruling has been weaponised. It will not be the last. Home Affairs can refer a disinformation campaign to the IEC. They cannot refer a Constitutional Court judgment back to the Court for being politically inconvenient. The question is not whether the disinformation will stop. It is whether voters will hear the correction before they cast their vote.
ASYLUM APPLICATIONS | Tensions are escalating at the Durban Refugee Reception Centre as more asylum seekers join the queues, with some residents accusing police of prioritising the protection of foreign nationals over South Africans.

“What kind of society are we becoming if our first response is to ask whether something is technically legal, rather than whether it is morally right?”
I've reflected a lot this week while watching the Sibiya bail hearings. As a mother of an 18-year-old boy, this is not sitting well with me. Not because I believe the accused should be convicted before the courts have spoken. We must respect due process. But because I keep asking myself: what are we, as parents and as a society, teaching our children about power, consent, vulnerability and respect? Sure, an 18-year-old is legally an adult. But when a 59-year-old senior police official is accused of rape involving an 18-year-old, surely we must ask more than whether she is legally a minor. What does a massive age and power imbalance mean? What responsibility comes with occupying a position of authority? What conversations are we having with our daughters about consent and with our sons about respect, boundaries and power? And perhaps the hardest question: What kind of society are we becoming if our first response is to ask whether something is technically legal, rather than whether it is morally right? The courts must determine the facts and guilt. But we, as active citizens and parents, have a responsibility to ask the uncomfortable questions. Because our children are watching us. And they are learning from what we choose to question and what we choose to normalise. #ShadrackSibiyaCase #Sibiya #PowerDynamis

You will be at a family dinner or gathering with your parents | other patrons or guests in plain sight, and a man will threaten to kill you. A man you don’t know from Sam. A man too weak to take No for No. A man who has made money, who he alone thinks he is, name dropping and how dangerous he can get his entire personality. A man who barges into women’s public powder rooms, is a man who will send you crashing through walls behind closed doors ko Steyn City. There is no VIP to the present danger…

The man didn’t threaten to kill a woman in that “powder room”. I listened very carefully. He threatened to kill all three of them, one bullet each! He should be arrested, although with the culture of impunity in our country there may be no consequences for him.

This is a dystopian nightmare. The party that has engineered the collapse of local government and policing, with a concomitant explosion in violent crime is “demanding safer communities”?! Demanding of whom? Itself? For shame.
We are united in solidarity, raising our voices and demanding safer communities where women and children can live free from fear and violence. 📍 Rhodesfield Park to Kempton Park Police Station

I just saw a video of the Ndlovu Youth Choir singing on the streets of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. They spotted a makoti (bride) having her wedding photos taken and couldn’t help themselves. They sang for her and wished her a lifetime of love and joy. 🙏🏾❤️🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The fact that some of us were not from your political party but still adored you to bits is a testament of your beautiful & sincere personality. Funny, engaging & oh so passionate about the plight of the poor. RIP beautiful Sis❤️❤️❤️
The @DA_KZN has announced the passing of its councillor Welekazi Sibiya @African_Spring. Many would recall how active the @eThekwiniM councillor was on Twitter and always engaging in the pubic discourse. The party has describe her passing as a tremendous loss for its KZN and eThekwini structures given how outspoken she was.
