It's 2035 in Australia. I go to login to Facebook. During the legislated 5 minute welcome to country message, I glance around at my 200 square foot Sydney apartment. I got such a great deal on this place; $10m with only a 50/50 ownership share by the government. I do have to pay 50% market rate for rent but at least it was $0 down payment thanks to the recent Labor-Liberal-Greens tripartisan "let's own together" scheme. As the welcome to country finishes, my phone beeps. $5 deducted from my central bank digital currency wallet to pay the elder who is 1/32 aboriginal (no DNA test required). Plus $2 gas fee for the CBDC validators (100% state owned).
I click "login" but the facial recognition software detects a photograph of my 15 year old boy behind me and locks my account for 30 days. My phone beeps again. It's the MyGov app informing me I've been penalised 100 social credit points for allowing my kid onto social media and another 50 for looking away from the screen during the welcome to country. I also have to attend a 2 hour online cultural sensitivity seminar. My AC beeps; It automatically sets itself to 26°C to reflect my new social credit score.
I place my state-issued copy of "Das Kapital" in front of my son's photograph and attempt to login to X instead. I make sure watch the screen for the entire welcome to country but before it finishes, power to my apartment goes out. Turning to my phone, I dismiss the new $5 payment notification and load up the ABC website. After a 30 second advertisement by the government about an upcoming $3T investment into wind turbines and a 3 minute welcome to country, the site finally loads. I click "only essential" on the bio-metric data gathering notification. I then scroll past an article condemning Joe Rogan followed by 6-7 articles written by experts about how cheap and reliable renewables are to find out about a nation-wide load shedding presently occurring due to some unexpected cloud cover.
My roommate, the NDIS recipient that the government puts up free-of-charge in my apartment, pops his head in to ask what's going on and I let him know about the load shedding. I grab my things and head to my neighbour's place. Due to an exceptional social credit score he always seems to have power when mine goes out. As I exit my apartment, I'm jumped by 3 federal agents. I try to explain that liking an Elon Musk post on X must have been a mistake but they revoke my Internet access license anyway for "assisting in the spread of misinformation".
My phone beeps. It's the state run bank informing me the interest rate on my 100-year, three-generation mortgage has gone up 25bps due to a change in my household social credit score.
Another beautiful day in paradise.
