A Statement of Conscience on October 7 I will not start by saying ‘as a Muslim’ or ‘as an imam’, but as a human being. On October 7, over 1,200 innocent people were killed in a single day. Families were shot in their homes. Young people out dancing were hunted across open fields. Over 250 people, including children and the elderly, were dragged into Gaza as hostages. I think of a mother hiding in a safe room with her baby’s mouth covered. I think of a father listening as the line went quiet. I think of families who waited month after month for someone to come home, only to receive a coffin. I didn’t need my faith to recognize the evil of what happened. My heart told me first. But I’m a Muslim and an imam, and I owe the world one honest sentence: what was done that day was a crime against God. God teaches that whoever kills one innocent soul, it is as if he had killed all humanity. This day has an author: Yahya Sinwar. He planned it, ordered it, and knew what would follow. Every death of that day and war he started rests on him and Hamas leaders who sat in tunnels and foreign hotels and called slaughter a victory. It rests on every Palestinian leader who cheered, excused, handed out sweets, or said nothing. They chose this. They own it. But Sinwar did not invent himself. He was the fruit of a tree planted almost a century ago by the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas named itself in its founding charter as the Brotherhood’s branch in Palestine. The Brotherhood’s poison is slow. It arrives through study circles, youth camps, charity boxes, and kind words to lonely young men. Drop by drop, it teaches him that his religion is a political party, his neighbour is his enemy, the Jew is the cause of his sorrow, and God is pleased by rage. By the time the gun arrives, the soul is already taken. I have seen this poison in mosques where sermons became rallies and young men could recite slogans but not sit still for a verse on mercy. Every people that let the Brotherhood in has paid in blood and ruined generations. It has never built anything it did not first set on fire. Behind Hamas stands another hand: the IRGC. It was the IRGC’s money, weapons, and training that turned a hateful idea into an army. One calls itself Sunni and the other Shia, and they may curse each other’s creeds, but they are united in what they worship. It is not God. It is power. The same IRGC that armed the killers of October 7 shoots Iranian girls for showing their hair, hangs young men for asking to be free, and has left graves from Tehran to Damascus to Beirut. They speak in God’s name. So did Pharaoh speak in the name of heaven. So let me say this clearly. Hamas and the IRGC are not merely enemies of Islam. That would be too small a charge, as if their crime were only against us. They are enemies of God. God is the Giver of life, yet they deal in death. God calls Himself the Most Merciful, yet they have made cruelty a sacrament. God honoured the children of Adam, yet they look at a child and see a target or a shield. To murder what God created and sign His name to it is the oldest blasphemy. And we Muslims have been too quiet. Some of us were afraid. Some told ourselves it was not our business. Some, God forgive them, felt something other than horror that morning and never confessed it. Silence was the soil this poison grew in. I will not add to it. So on this anniversary, let us say plainly what our scripture already says. The Jews are not our enemies. They are our cousins in Abraham, and their dead were created by the same God who created us. Today belongs to them: the murdered, the hostages, and families who still set a place at the table. To them I say: I am sorry for what was done to you by men who used the words of my prayers. You’re not alone in your grief or remembrance. The enemies of God are those who murder in His name. We know their names. It is time we said them from our own pulpits, in our own voices, before they speak for us again. Imam Tawhidi

Desecrating the memory of murdered, innocent Jews today of all days and refusing to even condemn Hamas is obscene. There are 364 other days you can wrongly criticize Israel for defending herself. If you had respect for the dead, you'd just acknowledge the tragedy, but you don’t.
This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss. The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes. Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment. To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.

It was wonderful to spend Rosh Hashanah last week with Missy and Elaine, two lifelong Michiganders who welcomed me into their home and taught me about the sweet and joyous meaning of Rosh Hashanah. We talked about the work we can do together to build a more just and peaceful future for our communities here in Michigan. Shana tova and shavua tov!

One of the best charter schools in the country, Success Academy, just filed suit against the NYS Department of Education Commissioner Betty Rosa for no longer permitting the College Board from disclosing AP exam results from NYS schools. For years, NYSED had permitted the College Board to share aggregate, non-personally identifying data on Advanced Placement (AP) exams with U.S. News & World Report, as 47 other states have also done, so that U.S. News could develop its national ranking of all public high schools. This year, Commissioner Rosa blocked the College Board from providing AP data to U.S. News preventing SA’s data from being released. The AP exam disclosure is important as it plays a significant role in school rankings nationwide. Success Academy in previous years was ranked 11th in NYS and 9th in NYC last year, the highest of any school that does not have selective admissions. Without the AP data this year, Success Academy’s ranking dropped to 196th statewide and the school’s and its students extraordinary outperformance thereby has gone unrecognized. Success Academy does not limit demanding AP coursework to a small, academically elite group — all of its students (who win admission by lottery) have access to challenging, college-level academic work. And they have produced exceptional AP results. This year, more than 3,000 SA students took 7,810 AP examinations across 18 subjects—with an average pass rate of 68 percent. Nationally, fewer than 25 percent of high school students pass even one AP examination by the time they graduate. At Success, 95 percent of its 2026 graduating class passed three or more AP examinations, 79 percent passed five or more, and 60 percent passed seven or more. They outperformed their New York and global peers on nine AP examinations, including U.S. and European History, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Literature. Ask yourself why NYSED Commissioner Betty Rosa would choose to limit the release of student performance data on APs. By doing so, she diminishes the performance of the best charter schools, masking the poor performance of NYS and NYC public schools, and limiting the recognition of Success’ and other great charter schools’ faculty and students. The UFT teachers union recently sued Success Academy for ostensibly violating the Charter cap, which prevents Success, the largest NYC charter school operator, from opening new schools. So here in America, the teachers union working with the NYSED is using litigation and concealment of data to prevent our kids from getting a better education and keep parents in the dark. This should be a crime, and Betty Rosa should be ashamed of herself. (I have cribbed sections of some of the language and data above from a letter from Success Academy’s Founder & CEO Eva Moskowitz. If X had footnotes I would have added them.)

The really funny thing is going to be when the DSA does a Dan Goldman on him in two years and rugpulls his congressional seat because they found a 24 year old female Muslim socialist with ISIS ties to replace him.
Brad Lander spent years appeasing the Islamists, Palestinianists, and far-left—vilifying Israel and throwing other Jews under the bus for political acceptance. And still, they reject him for being a Jew. That’s the pathetic lesson of appeasement. These extremists aren’t just hostile to Israel. They’re hostile to the democratic values that sustain America and the West. You cannot appease extremists into accepting you. You only empower them. @JewRepAlliance @JRCaucus @Republicans @CPAC

Netanyahu on Erdoğan’s remarks: “We take his calls for the annihilation of the State of Israel very seriously — we will draw the attention of the United States to them.” The full quote from the cabinet meeting: “Hardly a day goes by without Erdoğan calling for the annihilation of the State of Israel — we take these words very seriously, because if our people have learned one thing from history, it’s that when someone says they intend to destroy you, take them seriously. We take these remarks seriously, and we will also draw the attention of our American friends to these statements. We are not ignoring them.”
