❓Was Europe’s China problem fixed by last week’s car deal? ❓Is more managed trade needed? 👉Newly released OECD data show that cars aren’t the biggest part of China’s output surge since 2021. 👉Electrical equipment, electronics, machinery, chemicals and steel each added more. 🌟China’s export surge is stronger but narrower because China is its own best customer in several sectors. cc: @AdamPosen @BrankoMilan @kaushikcbasu @k_sonin @Lagarde @LHSummers @lindayueh @lugaricano @MarkJCarney @MaxCRoser @michaelxpettis @NateSilver538 @NIESRorg @NOELreports @NOIweala @Nouriel @ojblanchard1 @paulkrugman @PIIE @politico @profsfardoust @RayDalio @RBReich @RobinBrooksIIF @scottlincicome @SimonEvenett @simonjhix @sjwrenlewis @standardandedny @StephanieKelton 🔗linkedin.com/pulse/china-sho…

ICE is hunting down immigrants with the help of Palantir. In six months, Palantir’s founder, @PeterThiel, will be able to start spending unimaginable sums of money —completely tax-free — to bankroll the political causes dear to his heart. He'll be able to do it thanks to a tax-avoidance scheme he’s been building for more than 20 years, at a staggering cost to the American taxpayer. Let me explain. 🧵

An extremely relevant paper, given the renewed concern that wealth taxes lead to massive out-migration: The Norwegian wealth tax "exodus", discussed in global media, never happened. At most 100 individuals left. Tax revenue increased by +71.5%. No changes in business activity.
Norway's controversial 2021–2024 reforms nearly doubled the tax on business wealth. Firms of affected owners did not invest less, and outmigration was limited to the very top, from @Mariusring nber.org/papers/w35854

New paper: Selfish Equality In a global experiment, I show that high-redistribution countries are not particularly altruistic. Instead, they believe inequality is pragmatically harmful. This creates selfish equality -- the defining feature of redistributive countries.

More evidence for 'trickle-down' housing economics: Comparing superstar vs other metros over 2000-2019, housing supply growth in superstar metros was lower for high-end housing (left). But prices grew faster at the low end (right)! 1/

Very happy to see our paper on TCJA’s corporate tax cuts out in the AER. We ask: 1) How large are economic distortions from the corporate income tax? 2) Who bears in the incidence? A short summary thread. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.12…

How flexible are firms' input mixes in the long run? Using India's 1990s trade reforms, we estimate high substitutability across materials (elasticity ~2.5) and show input distortions cut output 3.5x more than prior work suggests. @Ale_M_Peter @cian_ruane econometricsociety.org/publi…

Scarce labor and high wages can be a shot in the arm of the economy as long as the skills and capital necessary to adopt new machinery are there. It’s the playbook of the world’s first “Great Escape” from poverty, hunger, and early death.
