#OneCaringAdult: Kids experience dozens of emotions every day & sometimes more than one at a time. We want them to know it’s okay to feel all of them, and recognizing and naming emotions is an important first step in building healthy coping skills. childmind.org/resources/ment…

“How are you feeling?" is a hard question for a kid to answer. Naming an emotion takes vocabulary and a bit of distance, and neither one is easy in the middle of the feeling.
Check-in charts like this ask two simple things instead of one big one: is the feeling pleasant or unpleasant, and is the energy high or low? Each quadrant has a color, so a kid can say "I'm in the yellow zone" and be understood.
Sara Guttentag, PsyD, a psychologist in our Mood Disorders Center, walks through how she uses a check-in-chart at the start of a session, and what the conversation looks like after that.

What makes play “good”? While adults often judge #play by its educational value or “niceness,” a new study went straight to the source: the children themselves. Researchers surveyed hundreds of schoolchildren to identify the core elements of a great play experience. #playwell #playmatters

“I’m not lovable.”
