ALT Taken in August 2022, this is the main facade of 11 Oswald Street in Glasgow’s Broomielaw neighbourhood. With its simple classical proportions, channelled base, simple pilasters and tympanum, this handsome stone facade, though extended upwards in 1902, has been gracing Oswald Street for 180 years so may well have seen Queen Victoria and Prince Albert passing by during their 1849 visit to Glasgow just five years later. It is unfortunate that the facade has been painted over. What’s even more unfortunate is how windows have been allowed to collapse thus exposing the interior to the elements as the building is no longer wind or watertight. Outgrowths of buddleja have also not assisted matters as the roots of the plant will be breaking up the stonework.
