How it works The scammer sends you real money, usually a few hundred dollars, from a stolen or compromised bank account (phishing, credential theft, etc.). You get a genuine Zelle notification and the funds show up in your app. Within minutes they contact you by text, call, or the Zelle app, claiming it was a mistake. Common stories: it was meant for their landlord, rent, a medical bill, or a family member. They sound apologetic and urgent, and they ask you to send the same amount back right away. They may also insist you send it to a different phone number or email than the one that paid you. You send a new Zelle payment from your account. That transfer is authorized by you, so it is treated like cash: instant and generally irreversible. The real owner of the compromised account reports the outgoing transfer as unauthorized. Their bank reverses it under normal fraud rules. That reversal pulls the original deposit back out of your account. It does not undo the separate payment you sent. Net net, you're out the money you sent.
