21 years ago today, on October 19, 2005, Hurricane Wilma became the strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic. 185 mph sustained winds surrounded its 2.3 mile-wide pinhole eye. (That's narrower than the El Reno tornado.) Its minimum pressure bottomed out at 882 millibars, or 26.05 inches – the lowest on record in the Atlantic. That meant it was missing 13% of the air from its middle, resulting in an incredibly powerful vacuum effect that drove extreme inward winds. On October 24, Wilma made landfall in Cape Romano, Florida, with winds of 120 mph as a mid-tier Category 3.
