ALT Critical Studies on Terrorism Annual Conference (hybrid) 3-4 September 2024 Location: The University of Sheffield The label of ‘terrorism’ and the permissibility of violence This year’s annual conference is centred on the theme of settler colonial violence and those violences made permissible through the framing of ‘terrorism’. This further invites a focus on the ongoing and current settler colonial violence in Gaza which has been described as a plausible genocide by the ICJ. Internationally, a broad use of the term ‘terrorism’ is currently being used to curtail freedoms of speech, expressions of solidarity and the right to protest, confirming previous warnings by the UN Special Rapporteur on Counter Terrorism and Human Rights. In light of this, we encourage submissions which pay special attention to Palestine, the discursive power of the category ‘terrorism’ and the violence it permits in response to it throughout this annual conference.
