Some magical progress towards "magic state" in quantum!
Our @GoogleQuantumAI team has demonstrated "magic state cultivation" on physical hardware for the first time. The result is a 40x error reduction on our Willow processor vs. previous methods, achieving a state-of-the-art 99.99% logical fidelity.
It's another step towards useful, error-corrected quantum computers to help solve the hardest problems. The result is published in Science today, watch the video below to see how it works

Published in Science today: Magic state cultivation works in practice on our Willow processor. We achieved a 40x error reduction, compared to without cultivation, and 99.99% fidelity. Learn how this addresses a critical resource bottleneck: goo.gle/4yr8V0H

(🚨) So to be very clear, FIFA rules do *not* allow the USMNT to appeal the Balogun red card *on the basis of claiming the referee erred*.
But.
Under the circumstances, the USMNT should appeal on the very different grounds ESPN just reported on: misapplication of VAR protocols.

We did some experimental testing of magic state cultivation! arxiv.org/abs/2512.13908
A ~1e-4 end2end infidelity is tricky to measure with tomography, so we checked it vs more cultivation. The full escape stage is too wide for the chip, but we did try ending in the grafted code.

Introducing Willow, our new state-of-the-art quantum computing chip with a breakthrough that can reduce errors exponentially as we scale up using more qubits, cracking a 30-year challenge in the field. In benchmark tests, Willow solved a standard computation in <5 mins that would take a leading supercomputer over 10^25 years, far beyond the age of the universe(!).

Today we're introducing our new quantum chip, Willow!
Willow is our first below-threshold quantum processor, which you can now read about in Nature t.ly/q7mVH.
@KJSatz and I also wrote a blog about it t.ly/gEaQA.
TLDR: QEC is blasting off. 🚀🚀🚀

Can you improve a well known quantum code by only subtracting things? Turns out yes! Bacon-Shor's lack of threshold can be fixed by deleting the right pattern of gates from its circuit. Weird!
