New: ProPublica’s Jake Pearson lost $10,000 mimicking the betting patterns of a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company’s “responsible gaming” safeguards. One week in, he was invited to become a VIP — and faced little pushback as he spiraled. propub.li/4dGHrwr

Per a note to Boston Globe staff today, the lesbian bar story generated 1,000 subscriptions to the paper yesterday. The Globe’s managing editor said it was “by far our best performing story of the year,” and appears to be “on pace to shatter all sorts of Globe records.”

Almost two years ago, the Carroll Gardens Thai restaurant Ugly Baby announced that it would be closing. Now it has returned, in Williamsburg this time, in a window-lined, B.Q.E.-adjacent space more than twice the size of its former digs. Its new menu, which comes as New York is in the throes of a Thai-spiciness rapture, is divided into three categories, in ascending order of spiciness: the Laughs, the Cries, and the Ugly. While the menu centers on spice, “Ugly Baby—both before and now—is more than just a place to show off your oh-so-manly pain tolerance, or to punish your digestive tract,” Helen Rosner writes. During the 2024 U.S. Open, a 19-year-old man from Amish country bet $100 on a women’s singles match. When the bet started to go bad, he did something dumb & dangerous that touched on every disturbing trend in sports & American society. Column:

As a recent Syracuse alum and current member of the Young Alumni Council, I never quite understood why the school was so eager to build all of these new dorms and housing to expand campus while I was a student, while also showing real concern for the future enrollment situation given the looming demographic cliff
Add in the unforeseen international student shock and this is what you end up with
The school did a real attempted crack down on greek life, and has struggled in sports, which just adds gasoline to the small fire that started burning around COVID time
Syracuse offered me a good amount of scholarship money, and Newhouse/Maxwell are both highly regarded programs for what I wanted to study. It was a great experience that I cherish and that’s why I stay involved myself
But I hope the school is getting real that the geographic and cost challenges are going to get worse, not better
Great work from DO alum @Roshan_f16
Yikes.

Tim Curry was a twentysomething stage actor in London when, in the seedy, sex-drenched 1970s, he auditioned for a new musical spoof of B movies called “The Rocky Horror Show.” It became a sensation. But Curry’s career encompassed much more than “Rocky Horror”: a particularly delectable villain, he played Little Orphan Annie’s abductor (“Annie”), Long John Silver (“Muppet Treasure Island”), the Lord of Darkness (“Legend”), and the world’s scariest clown (“It”). He appeared in comedies as a mystery-solving butler (“Clue”), a harried concierge (“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”), and King Arthur (“Spamalot”), and he had a feral, if short-lived, rock career.
