"so the $1 difference?" "that's the spread." BUYER SELLER Bid: $100 ← $1 → Ask: $101 ↓ Orders meet ↓ Trade happens "and when someone actually accepts that price?" "that's when the transaction happens. the market keeps repricing as buyers and sellers respond to new information." he paused. "so nobody is actually setting the price?" "not one person or committee. the live market price emerges from the interaction of participants and orders." then i added a caveat. "different markets have different structures. gold, for example, has benchmark processes, and different venues can have different prices. but there isn't one authority controlling every live market price. bitcoin is another example entirely. it trades across a decentralised global market." he nodded slowly. "okay. but why are you explaining all this?"
