Back officially from maternity leave today. The best job in the world is being a mom and I’m grateful to @ABC for the time I was able to spend at home with family these past four months ❤️ My last day at work was the day Nicolás Maduro was captured and what’s true about this industry is the news never stops. I have the most incredible colleagues, many of whom found themselves in a scary and fluid situation this past weekend and reported so gracefully under pressure. This job is not easy, to say the least. I’m lucky to work with them — now let’s break some news!

The 5 network WH TV pool provides raw materials of news coverage: video, audio, editorial information and logistical support to news outlets then seen across the world. That is separate from how individual outlets use the material to prepare their own stories and make their own editorial choices.

>> @MonicaHesse gets it: "Philosophically, the press pool communicates that the executive branch of the United States belongs to the people. That the president’s words and actions should be visible to all of us. The government should be an open book. This is so important that competing news organizations agree to share with one another and with the public as part of a broader and loftier mission." washingtonpost.com/style/202…

Yes, WHCA has long provided specific guidance from Secret Service and various administrations on matters where video material should not be used at all or with limitations for security reasons.
For decades, the @whca has advised poolers not to air video of taillights because it’s a potential risk to the security of the motorcade.

The 5 networks expend considerable resources for staff, equipment, travel costs to provide coverage of the president anywhere in the world and have an established infrastructure for how the images, audio and editorial information is distributed for use by other outlets. That is how the public receives this coverage.
The primary White House TV pool is made up of 5 networks: CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, and FOX. We take turns covering POTUS for pooled events and trips, and then share footage with the other 4 plus other outlets. Today there is no tv pool, so Trump won’t have a crew with him at UNGA.

Journalists are annoying. Officials get tired of our questions; readers may wish we asked different ones. (Frankly, we annoy each other as we compete for scoops.) But being annoying — pushing our government for answers — is part of the press freedom that makes America great.
MS NOW said its journalists were denied access to the White House grounds Saturday, a day after President Trump said he would ban the outlet, as well as CNN and Politico, from the site. The president said Friday he disliked how they covered him. wapo.st/46RUEip

Here's MS NOW reporter @gardnerakayla describing her arrival at the White House this morning. Her badge didn't work. "The officer asked me to hand over my badge. He said that it was disabled. I asked why I was not able to get inside. He said it was above him."

The president said it plainly in the Oval Office, describing his own planned action as a “ban on the free press.” The Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization’s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask. This is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation’s highest office. The WHCA stands in defense of our colleagues at CNN, MSNOW, and POLITICO who are being singled out for doing their jobs. - Jacqui Heinrich, WHCA President

Really can’t emphasize enough how remarkable this statement is coming from Joe DiGenova, who spent the better part of a decade pushing the conspiracy theory that he was in charge of investigating. As @mollylroberts and I reported earlier this year: lawfaremedia.org/article/the…
diGenova just told me by phone when I asked about his abrupt exit: “If you want indictments where there’s no evidence, you have an ethical problem”
