Very interesting - and concerning - analysis
My latest for @TIME:
The dominant perspective in Tehran is that the next war must be fought in a way that makes it so costly that a future U.S. president would not contemplate another.

If current turnout numbers hold—which indicate highest Israeli turnout this century—it will force a critical decision. If most of the higher turnout is driven by voters supporting Ra'am and Joint List, it will bring the coalition numbers down but also the Jewish opposition 1/

🗳️ FIVE scenarios at play as Israel votes in major elex:
1- Opposition wins clear majority
2- Netanyahu wins
3- Eisenkot forms minority government
4- Eisenkot + Netanyahu form unity gov.
5- Stalemate, new elections . Follow @AlMonitor al-monitor.com/originals/202…

Interesting
Apart from the substance of the discussions, what was interesting about the meeting was that it was hosted by Mohsen Rezaei rather than Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
This is also a sign of changing internal dynamics within the Iranian political system, in which Ghalibaf no longer seems to play the central role he played during the war and shortly afterward, especially in the negotiations that led to the Islamabad MoU.
Now, everything appears to be channeled through the SNSC and its secretary, Mohsen Rezaei.
This does not mean that Ghalibaf is no longer influential, but his relative position within the system seems to have weakened in favor of more confrontational figures such as Rezaei, Vahidi, and others.

I was quoted in this @CNN report by @MostafaSalemCNN on today's high-level security meeting in Terhan:
Tehran wants credible guarantees that any agreement would prevent another military attack, and it is difficult to see how Saudi Arabia, Turkey or Pakistan could provide such guarantees or exert sufficient influence over Trump to secure them.
Unless these countries bring something new to the table that could change the calculations in either Tehran or Washington, the meeting is unlikely to produce a substantive breakthrough.
For now, it looks more like a last-minute attempt to prevent the resumption of war than the beginning of a new diplomatic process.

Useful function of the Mecca Alliance: it creates a framework for high-level meetings with Iran, esp. for Saudi Arabia.
Saudi defense min. Khaled bin Salman, Pakistani military chief Asem Munir, and Turkish intel head Ibrahim Kalin jointly visit Tehran:

Making plans do not equal making a decision, of course, but with all that’s happening—diplomacy stalled, carriers heading into place, weird Israeli Air Force trial runs/defense tests, diplomats leaving etc.—this seems quite credible.
The United States and Israel have made plans for attacking Iran once they’re done with their elections, reports @nytimes. nytimes.com/2026/10/21/us/po…

The key Q is whether Hezbollah returns to killing Lebanese. The ingredients are there for another 2005: international pressure, emboldened security forces, openly hostile cabinet, patrons on the defensive. I’m less sure about Shia support but maybe this is meant to fix that too?
Always a pleasure to join @WarOnTheRocks Warcast podcast, this time focusing on the strategic situation in South Lebanon, Israeli tactics, Hezbollah's standing, and what Israeli elections might mean for Lebanon
Not my title but effective enough.

Iran can scatter drone production across the country in small workshops. Missile production doesn’t work that way. (Members Only)
