आयरलैंड के टिपरेरी का एक गरीब लड़का, जॉर्ज थॉमस, किस्मत के ऐसे खेल में भारत पहुँचा कि आगे चलकर हरियाणा में हांसी रियासत का राजा बन बैठा।
उसकी कहानी किसी रोमांचक उपन्यास से कम नहीं। जहाज़ों पर काम करने वाला यह नौजवान ब्रिटिश नौसेना में जबरन भर्ती किए जाने के बाद मद्रास पहुँचा और वहीं से उसकी जिंदगी ने नया मोड़ लिया।
जहाज़ छोड़कर वह दक्षिण भारत के पॉलिगर सरदारों की लड़ाइयों में जा कूदा। फिर हैदराबाद के निज़ाम की सेना, घुड़सवार लड़ाकों के गिरोह और उत्तर भारत के युद्धक्षेत्र, हर जगह उसकी तलवार और हिम्मत ने उसे आगे बढ़ाया। भारत में लोग उसे ‘जहाज़ी साहब’ कहने लगे।
दिल्ली पहुँचा तो उसकी मुलाकात हुई बेगम समरू से, सरधना की ताकतवर शासिका, जिसके पास अपनी सेना, अपना दरबार और बड़ी राजनीतिक हैसियत थी। जॉर्ज थॉमस उसकी फौज का सेनापति बना और दोनों के बीच प्रेम-संबंध की कहानियाँ भी इतिहास में दर्ज हैं। लेकिन दरबार की दुनिया में प्रेम और सत्ता कहाँ अलग रहते हैं!
फ्रांसीसी साहसी आर्मां ले वासूल्ट के बेगम के जीवन में आने के बाद थॉमस ने उसका साथ छोड़ दिया। कुछ समय बाद जब बेगम के अपने सैनिकों ने विद्रोह कर दिया और उसकी जान पर बन आई, तो यही पुराना सेनापति उसकी मदद के लिए लौट आया। उसने बेगम को फिर से सत्ता दिलाई और उसके बाद मराठा सरदार अप्पा खांडे राव की सेवा में चला गया।
फिर आया 1797 का वह दौर, जब मुगल साम्राज्य बिखर रहा था, महादजी सिंधिया की मराठा शक्ति उत्तर भारत में प्रभाव जमाए हुए थी और सिख, जाट, राजपूत तथा मराठा सरदार अपने-अपने इलाकों के लिए लड़ रहे थे। इसी उथल-पुथल में थॉमस ने तय किया कि अब वह दूसरों की लड़ाइयाँ लड़ने के बजाय अपना राज्य बनाएगा।
उसने हांसी के पुराने किले पर क़ब्ज़ा किया और उसे अपनी राजधानी बनाया। हिसार, रोहतक और आसपास के इलाकों में अपनी सत्ता जमाई, अपनी सेना तैयार की, तोपें और बंदूकें बनवाने के कारखाने खड़े किए और अपना टकसाल तक स्थापित कर दिया। कल तक जो आदमी दूसरों की फौज में नौकरी करता था, अब उसके नाम के सिक्के चलने लगे। वह कहलाया हांसी का राजा “जहाज़ी साहब”, आयरलैंड का बेटा और हरियाणा का फिरंगी शासक।
लेकिन अपनी ताकत बढ़ाने और पंजाब की ओर पैर फैलाने की महत्वाकांक्षा ने उसे सिख सरदारों और सिंधिया के यूरोपीय सेनापतियों से टकराव में ला खड़ा किया। कई लड़ाइयों के बाद फ्रांसीसी कमांडर लुई बुर्किएँ की सेना ने उसे घेर लिया। 1801 में उसका राज्य समाप्त हो गया। उसे धन-संपत्ति लेकर ब्रिटिश इलाके की ओर जाने की अनुमति मिली, मगर आयरलैंड लौटने का उसका सपना पूरा न हुआ। कलकत्ता की ओर जाते हुए 22 अगस्त 1802 को बहारामपुर में बुखार से उसकी मृत्यु हो गई।
एक गरीब आयरिश लड़का, जो कभी समुद्र के जहाज़ पर काम करता था, कुछ वर्षों के लिए हिन्दुस्तान में राजा बना और फिर इतिहास की धूल में खो गया।
उसकी सल्तनत मिट गई, लेकिन हांसी के राजा जहाज़ी थॉमस की कहानी आज भी उस दौर की याद दिलाती है, जब तलवार, किस्मत और महत्वाकांक्षा के सहारे कोई अनजान मुसाफिर भी अपना ताज बना सकता था।
