Lots of controversy after my post about explicit, systematic instruction! Discussions are good! But watch what happens when, yesterday, I decided to take an inquiry-based approach in a literacy lesson…. I asked students to guess the meaning of a new word (Château). Two incorrect answers were given and I inevitably had to explicitly tell them the correct answer in the end! It was NOT a good use of precious instructional time and deflated their confidence in what they thought they knew. Direct, explicit instruction is THE most effective approach to learning. You can’t activate prior knowledge if you don’t have the knowledge to begin with!! @MrZachG @C_Hendrick @nsachdeva2019

I REALLY wish I’d had these REALLY Great Reading strategies 10 years ago! @ReallyGreatRead Instead of telling students to memorize irregular words, teach them the “regular” parts of the word and learn the irregular parts by ❤️! Lesson plans and teacher scripts included! This is AMAZING!! reallygreatreading.com/sites…

My goal is to have every single one of my Year 2 #FDK students reading 100 French words by the end of the year. Here’s how we do it: ✅Collaboration with other classroom educators ✅Daily visual review of sounds ✅Daily decoding of syllables ✅Daily decoding of simple, decodable words ✅I do, we do, You do approach to instruction ✅Integrate instruction of articulatory gestures ✅Immediate feedback when errors are made ✅Celebrate success with “Raise the Roof!” Explicit (teacher directed), systematic (routine-oriented), word reading instruction for the win! #ScienceOfReading @SoRclassroom

Such fun presenting with @AliciaFromTiny this morning. Thanks for the opportunity, @ONLibraryAssoc!
Today at @ONLibraryAssoc we encouraged libraries to "get loud" about dyslexia since they play a key role in #DyslexiaAwareness and support in the community #OLASC Learn more about how IDA Ontario supports public libraries idaontario.com/library-proje…

"I graduated High School this week. When my dad said he had a present for me I thought I was getting some cheesy graduation card. But what I received was something truly priceless. Following the ceremony he handed me a bag with a copy of "Oh The Places You'll Go" by Doctor Seuss inside. At first I just smiled and said that it meant a lot and that I loved that book. But then he told me, 'No, open it up.' On the first page I see a short paragraph written by none other than my kindergarten teacher. I start tearing up but I'm still confused. He tells me, 'Every year, for the past 13 years, since the day you started kindergarten I've gotten every teacher, coach and principal to write a little something about you inside this book.' "My early teachers mention my "pigtails and giggles" while my high school teachers mention my "wit and sharp thinking." But they all mention my humor and love for life. It is astounding to receive something this moving, touching nostalgic and thoughtful."

To all of my former staff this is learning that I would highly recommend!
Wanting to learn more about responsive literacy instruction informed from assessment data? This will be an exceptional book study for all educators (not just those in Ontario).

One thing I’ve learned in my 20+ years of teaching is that no resource, no matter how amazing it is, can teach a child to read. The magic is in the instruction. These decodable books from @scholasticCDA are fantastic but what makes the books decodable is the instruction BEFORE reading! I use code packs that target the letter/sound associations found in the book before I give students the book. Therefore, there are no surprises and no guessing required! @ScholasticEdu
