Groups of young people looted and vandalized shops in central Milan on Sunday, a day after the city’s cost-of-living protests turned violent.
About 2,000 youths, many organizing in small groups through social media, smashed windows and stole goods from stores including a Carrefour supermarket and Levi’s, Under Armour and Decathlon outlets near the Duomo and Via Torino.
Police used tear gas and water cannons, sealed off the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and closed the cathedral early to tourists.
More than 200 people were taken to police stations, about 80% of them minors, and business groups estimated damages in the hundreds of thousands of euros.

BIG: Egypt’s National Defense Council has approved providing “all necessary and possible forms of support” to defend Saudi Arabia, as Houthi attacks on the kingdom intensify.
The council, chaired by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, declared full solidarity with Riyadh and called for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis.
The move follows Sisi’s pledge on Saturday that Egypt would take any measure to defend Saudi Arabia if requested, stressing the role would be defensive only.
Egypt’s parliament was set to hold an emergency session on Sunday to consider authorizing the deployment.

🇾🇪 Ansarallah's governor of Taiz has issued an open letter urging Saudi-backed fighters trapped in the encircled city to accept an amnesty and go home.
"Your blood is protected, your honor preserved, and your property respected," wrote Ahmad Amin al-Musawa, the Sanaa-appointed acting governor, according to the Yemen Press Agency. "Return to your families, villages, and cities."
The letter is the latest of several offers from Sanaa to the forces holding Taiz's last three government-controlled districts:
➤ Oct. 4: Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Supreme Political Council, confirmed a presidential pardon still covers anyone who leaves Saudi-backed forces.
➤ Oct. 15: Al-Musawa offered fighters safe passage out along the al-Turba road to Aden, with their vehicles and personal weapons.
➤ Oct. 16: Ansarallah forces issued what they called a "final warning" to leave the city.
Ansarallah now controls every entry point to Taiz, a city of more than 1 million people. Fighting and road closures have cut aid to about 800,000 people, the World Food Programme said.
