Israeli company Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and U.S. firearms manufacturer SIG SAUER have completed a live-fire test of the “FIRE STORM 250,” a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone armed with an M250 light machine gun.
During the test, the drone reportedly hovered over a simulated battlefield, identified targets using its onboard camera and engaged them in single-shot and semi-automatic firing modes. According to IAI, the trials also assessed the system’s accuracy and built-in safety features.
The M250 machine gun is mounted on SIG SAUER’s remotely operated MICROLIGHT weapon station. The combined weight of the station, gun and ammunition is approximately 24 kg (53 lb). The drone can reportedly remain airborne for up to three hours while carrying 200 rounds of ammunition.
The system provides operators with live video, target tracking and fire-control information. A human operator must authorize every shot before the weapon can fire.
