When was the last time you had a big family reunion? Like your extended family; siblings, parents, cousins, uncles, everyone was around? Na only burial these days dey make families see each other. The economy has forced individualism on us. It was never like this before. We used to pride in our communal values as a society. Cos that’s actually what strengthens family values. When I was younger, once it was Christmas, New Year, Easter, you would be guaranteed to see everybody. Now, half of your family dey abroad dey seek greener pastures. The rest scattered all over Nigeria and always lacking the economic strength to travel, plus scares of kidnapping and insecurity. You can see clearly how the economy of Nigeria is eroding family values. Young people of 18-20 now hustle to feed their parents. Before it was parents that would train their wards up until marriage age and still pay for their marriage and set up a family for them. Now, na who dey marry again? The poor young girls into prostitution are the ones feeding their parents and paying their siblings’ school fees. Yet you expect these parents to instill family values in them. You wan teach who dey feed you family values? Every time, family values family values. Where the family values wan come from? You people have no idea what poverty has done to you as a society. It has even made you so foolish that you don’t know the source of your problems and don’t care to know. You will ignore those destroying your family values and focus your energy on poor young girls who are reacting to circumstances. The people destroying your family values are the same people that have successfully sold you a dummy that your population is too much & you need to stop giving birth. You bought the soundbite and now regurgitating it. People who are actively trying to reduce your population through several means (because your population is a threat to them) are advising you on family planning and you are listening to them. Our mumu too much for this country sha. SMH.
