He was pulled over for drunk driving. He was completely sober. #MedicalMysteries #JustAskMD
In 1984 a doctor drank a flask of bacteria to prove his own hospital wrong.
Barry Marshall and Robin Warren kept finding curved bacteria in inflamed human stomachs, and almost nobody believed them. Ulcers were stress and acid. Everyone knew that. Animal models refused to cooperate, so Marshall swallowed a culture of the organism himself. Within days he was waking up nauseated. On day 10 a biopsy showed gastritis, and the same bacteria grew back out of his own stomach. In 2005 he and Warren took the Nobel Prize, and peptic ulcer disease stopped being a condition you managed for life and became one antibiotics can cure.
