We have a lot of selfish and socially-irresponsible people in Britain. They need re-educating and seriously punishing. We’re lobbying for MINIMUM fines to be increased to £1,000.

Sweden is committing more than €100 million to a sweeping classroom overhaul: replacing tablets and screens with traditional printed textbooks to help reverse falling student performance and sharpen focus. After more than a decade of embracing digital-first education, Swedish authorities are now pivoting back to paper-based learning. Official data and recent studies cited by the Ministry of Education show that prolonged screen use in class has been linked to shorter attention spans, weaker reading comprehension, and reduced critical-thinking abilities. Research consistently finds that reading on illuminated screens requires greater mental effort and invites more distractions compared to the calm, linear experience of physical books—factors believed to have contributed to declining academic outcomes in recent years. Under the new plan, every student will receive printed textbooks for all core subjects, restoring books as the central learning tool. Digital devices and online resources will remain available as supportive tools, but they will no longer dominate daily instruction. This bold €100+ million investment signals Sweden’s leadership in rethinking the role of technology in education. It underscores a broader, growing recognition worldwide: while screens provide speed and access, the hands-on, distraction-free engagement of physical books supports deeper concentration, stronger memory retention, and more effective long-term learning. By choosing paper over pixels, Sweden is charting a path toward a more balanced, evidence-informed classroom future—one that puts proven pedagogical principles ahead of unchecked digital trends.

Exactly right, and that’s the truth that gets buried under the outrage. What happened to Brenda Miles isn’t about asylum seekers or migration; it’s about how private equity has turned care into a profit machine. Many care homes are owned by offshore investment funds or financial groups that treat elderly residents as revenue streams, not human beings. They drain life savings from families who’ve already paid into the system all their lives, while underpaying staff, cutting corners, and charging councils extortionate rates for basic care. The real scandal is that we’ve allowed an essential public good, dignity in old age, to become a cash cow for investors. The workers are exhausted and underpaid, the residents are frightened and disposable once their money runs out, and the taxpayers are footing the bill for shareholder dividends. Blaming asylum seekers misses the mark entirely. This is about political failure, corporate greed, and a moral void in how we value our elders. Brenda deserved compassion and security, not eviction.

🚨Breaking News!📰⚡️ ALL the UK's top business groups have written opposing Labour's Employment Rights Bill as currently drafted. They say the Bill will have "deeply damaging implications for the government’s priority growth mission". Also, that "it is a recipe for damaging, not raising, living standards". Whilst the government has yet to name a single business supporting this Bill, for the UK’s top business groups to call for a rethink sends a powerful message.

Your baby doesn’t need screen time. 📱 📺 💻 You probably know that. But did you know that YOUR screen time also holds the potential to influence their development? In research from the University of Texas at Austin recently published in the journal Child Development, investigators synced recordings of mothers and their babies with mom’s smart phone usage records. What they found was that during periods of parental phone usage, verbal interactions between mothers and their babies dropped by 16%. (During comparatively shorter bursts of phone usage lasting less than 2 minutes, these interactions decreased even more - by 26%.) The bottom line: adult phone usage decreases one-on-one stimulation between infants and parents and exposes infants to less language. Screen time can be a touchy topic, I’ve found. And in today’s society it seems increasingly unrealistic to suggest that homes will be completely screen free - for parents or children. I’m a realist here. But perhaps the most interesting data point to come from this study is the average amount of parental smart phone usage they found among study participants: 4.4 HOURS per 12 hours studied. That’s a lot of screen time. The message here isn’t that parents need to (or realistically can) eliminate all smart phone usage. Many wouldn’t have that luxury even if they tried, due to work or other caregiving responsibilities. So what can be done? The authors suggest some important first steps: Being mindful of the impact phones can actually have on our our interactions/caregiving, and Remaining aware of how easily we can become consumed by our phones, despite our best intentions. After all, every minute we spend interacting with a screen is a minute that might otherwise be spent in the kind of brain-building, face-to-face interaction modeled so well by Campbell Williams in this lovely video she shared recently to TT (campbellwilliams_).
