Fantastic news that housing starts in London were up nearly 300% in the last year according to the latest government data released today.
These are very difficult times for homebuilding, but under this @MayorofLondon City Hall is doing more than every before to support delivery.
These are tough times for housebuilding in England, but new housing statistics released this morning show welcome signs of progress:
✅Housing starts in Q2 of this year were up 6% on the previous quarter (a 20% increase on the same quarter last year).
✅London saw the biggest increase with starts up a phenomenal 298% on last year.
✅Units within outline residential applications are up 41% from a year earlier.
✅Permission in principle decisions on brownfield register sites more than doubled (a 79% increase on the same quarter last year).
Over the past 26 months, we’ve undertaken the most rapid, holistic and radical overhaul of the housing and planning system in decades.
Despite the strong headwinds, we are going to stay the course and ensure the country enjoys high and sustainable rates of housebuilding in the years ahead.

Great to join @HomeBuildersFed to discuss the housing delivery ambition at the heart of @MayorofLondon's draft new London Plan, as well as progress on the emergency housing package for London 6 months on from when it was announced.
This morning, we hosted our London Residential Developers Forum, bringing together industry leaders to discuss the challenges facing London’s housing market.
It was fantastic to hear from our guest speaker, Jules Pipe CBE, Deputy Mayor of London for Planning, Regeneration and the Fire Service.
The session provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to share their insights on how the Draft London Plan could best support London’s home builders, as well as discuss the broader viability and affordability constraints across the wider housing market.

Great to join @QuoinPartners to discuss headlines, key themes and priorities of @MayorofLondon's draft new London Plan, and how it will make a difference to getting London building.
Today having carefully considered the proposed development for Beckton Riverside in the London Borough of Newham, I approved this planning application to deliver an indicative capacity of 2,977 new homes, with 8.1 % affordable homes (by habitable room).
The proposals will transform the former Beckton Gasworks site and contribute to housing delivery and the regeneration of this part of east London. This brings the total number of homes approved via @MayorofLondon's call-in process since January 2026 to 9,673.

A landmark investment in the homes Londoners desperately need.
For too long, too many Londoners have been locked out of a secure, affordable home. Today I'm announcing £6 billion in funding to change that, with a major focus on new social-rent and council homes.

Yesterday I welcomed the opportunity to join @nlalondon and representatives from across the built environment sector to unpack @MayorofLondon's draft new London Plan. An engaging evening and I look forward to further discussions on the draft Plan in the weeks ahead.
Great to join @_BusinessLDN and their members earlier this week to discuss emerging proposals in @MayorofLondon's draft new London Plan. If we are to get this right, input from London's business community and the development sector will be crucial.
This week, having carefully considered the proposed development at Motspur Park which falls within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and the London Borough of Merton, I approved this scheme to deliver 586 homes with 175 affordable (35% by habitable room).
Delivering the homes that Londoners need is a priority for @MayorofLondon and this development will make a valuable contribution to London's housing delivery and in the two boroughs. This bring the total of homes approved via call-ins since January 2026 to 6,750.
