So much of the right these days just have a massive patriotism problem. This guy: - is a tax exile (left long before this govt) - hates his own country while complaining he doesn’t get big enough subsidies from it - laments the hit to manufacturing driven by a Brexit he supported

So, after eighteen months of lying on the supermarket floor screaming at Denmark, Donald Trump has been handed the 1951 defence agreement, which already gave America bases and the run of Greenland for as long as NATO exists, and which it was using so enthusiastically that it closed sixteen of its seventeen installations there. The grown-ups have simply wrapped the toy he already owned in shiny new paper, told him it was the biggest present anyone has ever had, and he is now running round the garden showing it to everyone. He will certainly make the history books, although I fear not in the chapter he was hoping for.
This historic deal is a huge win for the United States and the American people. Thanks to President Trump’s vision and leadership, this historic agreement permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer. Greenland will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America and exclude any adversary from it and the surrounding area. This deal permanently and completely addresses our national security concerns in Greenland.

🚨 Paul Scholes on United going from 1st in running under Amorim to 19th under Carrick: “I saw the table this morning and I sent it to Giggsy. I said, ‘Have you looked at this?’ He said, ‘I don’t want to look at it.’ 14th in distance. 18th in sprints. 19th in high-speed runs. Outrun in every game except the one where City had ten men. I told him, ‘Under Amorim we were first in these. First. I didn’t like some of the football. I said it at the time. But they ran. Every week. You could see it in the 85th minute. Legs gone, still going.’ Now training is shorter. Sharper. Everybody clapped that. Then they go two-nil up at Old Trafford against Brighton and stop. I watched it back. After the second goal the running dies. They’re waiting. Waiting for the bench. Waiting for the night to save them. I said to Giggsy, ‘Roy would have taken the bus keys off them for this.’ He laughed. Then he stopped laughing. Because that’s the part people don’t want to say. Amorim didn’t get the results. I know. I lived it as a fan. But the numbers were honest. These numbers aren’t. You can call it control. You can call it Carrick-ball. I call it a team that decided running was optional. We used to be first in this. Now we’re 19th. If that doesn’t bother you, you never played for this club.”

Qataris have finally cracked football. They have become even better than City Group. Pep needed 7 years to win the UCL once with City while PSG have now won it back to back. United would have followed the same model as PSG by now, cleared the debt and put themselves in a completely different position. But no ‘we don’t want oil money, we want British owners.’ 🥰

The hardback of 'This is Also a Love Story' is discounted on Amazon in the UK until Sept 28. I am of course loathe to promote A, but my understanding is that uptake there can really help a book get more attention on a broader level, so I'm sharing it here. amazon.co.uk/This-Also-Love-…

🇵🇱 JUST IN: Poland is preparing for war with Putin. “We know he is plotting something” The most important task now is to prepare the country for various scenarios, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. “Poland and the Polish people cannot, under any circumstances, afford to be naïve or engage in wishful thinking. We must base our actions on facts, and those facts are unequivocal,” the politician stressed.

Macron and Tusk are speaking and acting with an urgency that makes the latest reports about Russia violating Lithuanian airspace even more concerning. It is not clear that the Government is taking the threat from Russia seriously enough. Its own intelligence assessment says an attack on NATO could come by 2030, while repeated smaller-scale incursions are already taking place. It comes only weeks after CIA Director John Ratcliffe made an unannounced visit to Moscow, reportedly to warn Russia against attacking a NATO member. Our European allies are responding with growing urgency, yet the Government still will not say what it intends to do on defence. The NATO Secretary General was in Britain only yesterday calling for that path to be set out, and I agree with him. The Conservatives set out two weeks ago both our route to higher defence spending at 3% of GDP and how we would pay for it. The Government should now explain what it knows about the escalations in Eastern Europe, how it assesses the threat and what it plans to do. We will put national security first and work with the Government where necessary. But when our own PM talks of national security not coming at the expense of social security, Labour MPs should remember: this was heard not only in Westminster or Manchester; it was also heard in Moscow.
