So, let me get this straight. It is bad for one organization to run "it all" but you want the US government to control all the Healthcare. Got it

Most authors engage with book piracy solely by writing long rants about their moral rights. That's all fine, say what you want, but in the real world, we have to deal with what is, not what should be. And one of the ways that we do that is to learn from the lesson of Steam. Piracy is not always motivated by the desire to enjoy your work while saving a few bucks. It's about resistance to some part of the experience. The novel in question is "Theft of Fire", my first. I'm almost done with the second, and I have no doubt that the day after it hits Amazon, it will hit the torrent sites. Some people will go there because they just don't like spending money, and they don't care if I can afford to finish the series. But others will do the same because the entire publishing industry stopped giving a crap what enjoy reading, 25 years ago, and they are simply tired of being rugpulled. Here's how authoring actually works, not fifty years ago, not ten years ago, but right now today. You are not in the bookselling business. You are in the audience business. You start your career in front of an entire world that doesn't know who you are, doesn't trust you with their time and attention, and doesn't want to pay you anything. Your job is to carve out a collection of people who DO know you, DO trust you, and WILL pay you. That is your audience. How much you get paid, whether you can go full time, and whether you become wealthy, depends entirely on the size and engagement of that audience. Books are just one of the ways they pay you. If you wanna be successful, you better think of others. But first you have to build that recognition and trust. The reason that the most skilled book-writers and story-tellers don't make the best payouts is because the perfect story does not automatically build a brand. It's only one part of a bigger game. So, yes, some people are going to steal your work and not pay you. Others are going to pay you twice. Others will pay you lots more than that for any piece of swag you can dream up to sell. Because they like you and what you do. I won't argue that IP theft isn't wrong. That's not the point. The point is that there is something better to do with your efforts than fuss about it, and that is figure out ways to monetize, build your brand, and develop your relationship with your audience. This may seem hard and unfair to authors who just want to write books, throw them over the wall to a publishing house, then go back to the keyboard. But this is the world we live in. Since publishing houses no longer understand that what they really are is investors, you have to be the investor. You have be the entrepreneur, and take responsibility for all aspects of your business. You can't just collect the gold. You have to figure out where it's buried.
I probably should have expected it, but, nevertheless, I did NOT expect this reply😅

The surest way to make something expensive is to have the government subsidize it. Look at college tuition and healthcare…

He did the meme
A 15 year old made fun of a local councillor on Facebook—photoshopped bunny ears on him, said he dressed like a “rent boy,” etc. So the councillor reported the kid to UK police and he was arrested. The councillor: “I was targeted by a child I had no way of dealing with.”

It's alarming how many lawmakers don't understand the First Amendment or pretend not to. It is totally, utterly disqualifying. If you can't handle someone recording your words, then...don't run for public office. The worst kind of snowflakery on display here.
Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

Estonia got a flat tax because its prime minister thought the West already had one. He was 32, trained as a historian, and had read exactly one book on economics: Milton Friedman's Free to Choose. 🧵

It's mind-numbing that so many consider it obvious that we could go from 90+% employed in agriculture to ~5% without causing mass unemployment, but that AI somehow will leave everybody idle, unemployed, and poor--because no one can predict what exact jobs will exist in the future.

No one was forced to buy books, batteries, or diapers from Amazon. They did so because Amazon saved them time, money, effort, or uncertainty. That is capitalism: People get rich by creating something others value enough to buy. humanprogress.org/jeff-bezos…

Repealing the Jones Act would achieve more onshoring *while reducing prices* than tariffs do. Tariffs are taxes on Americans. The Jones Act ruined U.S. shipping.
In 2025, 0.7% of Puerto Rico's propane came from the US mainland. From April-August under the Jones Act waiver, 78% of its propane came from the US mainland:

CLAIM: The ICE agents wore construction vests and masks that concealed their faces. There was no reasonable way to identify them as ICE agents. FACT: This illegal alien was the subject of a targeted enforcement action. What makes someone a target for immigration enforcement is whether or not they are illegally in the U.S.

I know that at a certain point it makes me sound naive, but I think we should be clear that a president announcing a ceasefire signed by two warring countries that doesn't actually exist is and should be the sort of thing that gets him swiftly removed from office.

I've been prototyping an automated peer review project. With current models you get human level peer review for about $0.10 of tokens. For $5 you can rederive every result, check every statistical inference, and audit every paper cited in both directions. There are about 100m papers in the scientific corpus. Most are not important. Many are sloppy. For structural reasons it's essentially impossible to change published work, even to correct a typo. For $500m today you can thoroughly audit every paper ever written. Every p-hacked result, every plagiarist, every fabrication, every citation club, everything. I don't have $500m so instead I build a tree, focusing on the 1% of papers that carry 99% of the signal, doing a cheap first pass looking for obvious problems. I can find 90% of the nonsense for a few hundred dollars of tokens. Any guesses where the biggest surprises will be found?

Attention Young Men: I am surrounded by 20 year old girls in my life that are smart, capable, hard working and cute. Nobody is dating them. Not sure what the deal is, but I don’t get it. Step 1: Stop playing video games Step 2: Head to great clips and get that lettuce cleaned up Step 3: Hit a shower (when dating hygiene is critical) Step 4: Go clean your car Step 5: Sign up for a yoga class Step 6: Go to the yoga class Step 7: Ask a cute for her phone number at yoga class (yes you can meet girls IRL and not just on the apps - 10/10 the Dirt Dog highly recommends) Step 8: Follow up within 2 days with a phone call and ask them out for this coming weekend Friday or Saturday night. Step 9: IMPORTANT - come up with a good game plane for date night. Get a dinner reservation, get an activity planned. Let them know in advance what you are doing so they can dress appropriately. I know you are gunna roll off the couch and head to date night, but they are not. They are going to stress about what to wear and call at least 6 different people on FaceTime to ask their opinion. Step 10: I highly recommend you bring flowers to the door step. I’m not covering that you go to the doorstep, because if you don’t do that you have no hope here. Women want men to date them. You don’t need to break the bank on flowers. Head to Trader Joe’s. Grab 2 different kinds of flowers. If you don’t know what matches find the closest looking lady to your mom at TJ’s and ask her. Wrap the 2 flowers into 1 bouquet with paper. Bonus Points you can cut open a TJ bag and use that as the paper. Step 11: Be a gentleman on the date. She isn’t there to hear your life story. Ask her about her. For every 1 question you answer, ask her 3. Open Doors, pay for the meal, be polite. Provided you follow most of this guideline you are highly likely to get yourself an opportunity for date number 2. Keep going until you find someone that you can’t imagine not being around all the time. That’s when you have found a good one for you. My life is complete with my wife as my companion. I wish you the same fortune in life. Happy Hunting.

You don’t hate cell providers enough.
for various reasons im currently trapped in a Kafkaesque billing hellhole w Verizon wherein they simultaneously insist I owe them money or else they'll terminate my service and also they refuse to let me pay them ln I remembered AI exists so I asked Codex desktop to fix it. the ensuing business<>computer<>human interaction dynamic was possibly one of the most surreal experiences of my life codex ended up driving my browser to interact w Verizon's broken-ass web app for an hour, using my password manager and email (with my permission) to source salient info I ultimately had to jank it up to astra high to get any results and at the end of a Long AI<>AI argument in the verizon support chat box thing it was able to get their bot to admit there was a transient backend issue on Verizons side due to an in-progress billing platform update, and convinced it to institute a "service suspension hold", a class of ask I as a human likely would've never been able to figure out to ask for if I'd been the one tryin to navigate this interaction whilst managing my rapidly depleting emotional resources anyway are you feeling the AGI yet
