✈️NEW RESEARCH ✈️ We need to fly less to stop climate breakdown. But excessive flying is dominated by the well-off. In Western Europe, the richer you are, the more likely you are to fly three or more times a year. It’s the wealthiest who need to reduce their flying the most.

And here we are 5 years later and I still feel the same way about consumer DNA tests, and apparently the entire board of 23andMe now agrees. Massive yikes incoming.

Gross disparity between coverage of luxury yaught sinking and refugees dying regularly in Mediterranean (3,041 last year). All such deaths are tragic but the difference in coverage is dystopian.

PLEASE read this. This is what we are doing to our kids but not fully reporting the truth of the magnitude of the planetary crisis. The media and political failure is depressing them and making them ill.
I met with a group of teenagers yesterday. One of their teachers had suggested that I talk to them about career paths because they're all anxious about exams, university choices and future work. Instead of talking to them, I listened, and the actual problem was very different.

Guess a key component of capitalism is focusing on the hypothetical gains of tech in the future instead of its real costs in the present 🙃

Therapy can only do so much if you’re not able to get your basic needs met. Mental health is affordable housing. Mental health is free healthcare. Mental health is free education. Mental health is food security. Mental health is financial stability. Therapy can’t fix the system.

it's becoming harder and harder to deny that you can either have a society of landlords and executives or one of art and human flourishing. not both.
psa: all the culture you liked from decades past was made possible by cheap rent and artists' pay keeping up with what things cost

Computer science used to be about making the most useful result out of the least amount of compute. But now due to AI it turned into exact opposite: use the most amount of compute to accomplish the dumbest piece of questionable result. The dumber and more compute, the better.

This highlights the massive inequality of aviation and climate change. Worth remembering though that to be among the 15% you only need to take 3 return flights per year. People who do that wouldn't see themselves as wealthy. Easy to point to 'them' but actually, it's us.
70% of flights are taken by just 15% of people – a tiny, wealthy group. To reduce air travel, without it becoming the preserve of the wealthy few, we need to tax excessive flying. A frequent flyer levy is the fairest way to tackle aviation emissions. neweconomics.org/2024/04/sha…

I don't think there's a better plot to illustrate AI's power demands than this one -- not only does Big Tech consume as much as countries like Slovenia, because of AI, their consumption is growing tremendously 🫠 bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

So LLaMa 3's carbon footprint is... huge? 🤯 They estimate it to be 2,290 tons of CO2eq, compared to 550t for training GPT-3 and 66t for training *all* of the BLOOM models (1B-176B) 🌬️

New: London has a shortage of homes, but it doesn't have a shortage of golf courses. In fact, London’s 95 golf courses take up more land than the entire borough of Brent. Here's the case for building on some of them. samdumitriu.com/p/homes-or-g…

Biases in AI image generators is a real thing, and, unlike LLMs, it is hard to eliminate that bias in training. The big LLM companies tend to address this bias quite bluntly, by quietly adding more diverse descriptions to people. The results can be weird. bloomberg.com/graphics/2023-…
