Luis Aranda passed away last Friday. As an impoverished teen in 2004, he joined the Carl Hayden Robotics Team with @MrOscarVazquez @Cristian_Arcega & Lorenzo Santillan and helped beat the collegiate all-stars at MIT to win the national underwater ROV competition. I met Luis in January 2005, soon after Carl Hayden’s triumph, and later wrote a Wired article and the book Spare Parts about him and his teammates. The 2015 Lionsgate film Spare Parts was based on their remarkable story. From the very beginning, I was struck by Luis’s kindness and warmth. He will be deeply missed.
