š„©āDonāt Sell the SteakāSell the Sizzle!āš„
Author and sales trainer, Elmer Wheeler coined this phrase almost a century ago, encouraging marketers to lean on emotions over logic when promoting their products and services.
If I had to guess, this is probably where the advertising industry first co-opted the word āsizzleā or āsizzle reelā to describe a short, fast-paced, promotional video.
My latest sizzle reel encompasses some of my favorite AEC and technology clients, including a few of my favorite recent projects from brandingāto brand filmsāto photography.
One of my favorite elements of a sizzle reel is the ability to incorporate different types of clients and projects into a single, mouth-watering piece.
If you see something here that inspires you, letās chat... perhaps over a sizzling, medium-rare steak.

On assignment with @JoshMiles.
Reminds me of highly underrated advice:
Find yourself a ride-or-die collaborator, and then take care of each other.

š° I almost missed the opening shot.
I only had the drone in the air for 30 seconds when the security guard at Coors Field asked me kindly to return it to the ground.
I was happy to oblige, but as a licensed drone pilot, I knew I wasn't doing anything illegal. If it were anyone else, they might have missed the shot altogether.
But I learned a thing about filming with a drone: *Always hit record BEFORE takeoff*
You never know when THAT moment is going to happen, and memory cards are cheap. So lucky for me, in spite of only being in the air for a minute total, I was already filming as I flew back towards the baseball diamond.
Later in the morning, I received permission to launch from outside the property and try again... but I already had the shot!
It's a tiny part of this sizzle video, but I'm so glad we were able to capture that moment, setting the stage for a fun, energetic @Bisnow event in Denver.
Check out the full sizzle, and be sure to crank the music! š¶

This is 48.
Ten years ago, I was alone in an airport and traveling for work when I saw a tall, older man stroll by. At probably more than twice my age, he looked healthier and more fit than I, and without a care in the world.Ā
As a tall guy, you notice things like⦠hmmm, I donāt see many tall, older guys walking around. (Yikes!) So when you do see one, and heās in great shape, it really does stand out.
On that day, inspired by a man Iāll never get to meet, I decided I not only wanted to get back in shape, but also that I wanted to be healthier and more fit at 50 than I would be at 40⦠certainly much better than 38.
Iāve had many stops and starts, but I quickly lost some unwanted pounds, eating low-carb (mostly keto), started lifting, and eventually started running.Ā
And as I sit here on my birthday, with 50 only two years away, Iām more committed than ever to keep this goingāto 50 and beyond!
Oh, and I chopped all my hair off. Iām donating it to locks of love. If youād like to kick in a donation, Iāll leave the facebook fundraiser info in the comments below!
Not all networking events are created equally...
but last week's Denver Sports & Entertainment event at @Bisnow was a hit!
What they got right:
ā
Homerun location: @CoorsField ā¾ļø
ā
High-energy starting lineup of speakers + @Smashburger founder Tom Ryan
ā
Plenty of networking timeouts to meet fellow attendees
(Oh, and they got me to capture the eventāphoto, video & drone)
Here are a handful of my fav captures... keep an eye out for the sizzle video.
Always good to hang, sir!
Found my brother @JoshMiles for some delicious Indian cuisine with the families.
What if you had it all to do over?
A new business? A new market? Or maybe just starting over?
If you were going to start again today with everything you already know, what would you do first?
This is a question that my friend @torreydawley and I ask each other all the time, but we always come back to the same answer.
Build the network.
Today at the SMPS Colorado One2One mentorship program kickoff event, I had the opportunity to speak about my philosophy of how I built my network.
Or what I refer to as, your most valuable professional asset.
I believe thereās no more powerful strategy to build your business than to spend time with people in your space that you know, like, and trust. And that includes direct competitors.
I also had the opportunity to share with the group my plans to launch a photo and video studio this fall.
And my strategy for growing the studio? Why, building my network, of course.
If you had to start over tomorrow, what would you do first?

How many looks can you get from one studio lighting setup?
One of my favorite reasons to shoot in the studio is how quickly you can get a totally different look by moving lights a touch or swapping outfits.
This shoot was with my sis, @hannahpierrou and we got her a ton of options for social media in just over an hour.
Which setup fits your vibe best?

š„ getting ready for varsity!
Hard to believe that I did this fun test shoot with Noelle nearly a year agoā¦
Sometimes I even impress myself with how long it takes me to post my work.
I recently played around with a couple of the images, adding some motion in After Effects.
Which one is your favorite?
Happy birthday to my best friend @torreydawley - celebrating with him this week in the mountains of Colorado.

It only took me two years to convince @JoshMiles to build a business that allowed us to take time off whenever we wanted to do things like this.
Whatās more impressive is how it took him only a matter of months to pull it off.
Weāve been enjoying our time ever since.
