I can recall two tech-driven apocalyptic predictions in my lifetime: Y2K and AI.
Y2K had an expiration date. 1/1/2000 came, everything still worked, and the doomer predictions stopped.
AI has no expiration date. Every new model is much more capable than the last. And as the pace of improvement accelerates, each new models brings harder-to-predict and understandably scarier risks.
Is there anything that can end the AI doomer cycle, or are we entering an era of permanent AI doomsday predictions?
Anthropic a few years ago:
“We may have accidentally created God. What should we name it?”
“How about something that rhymes with God, but is just different enough that people won’t realize until it’s too powerful to stop.”
