The budget isn’t really a point worth defending in regards to CLAYFACE.
Listen, even MORBIUS debuted with $39M. CLAYFACE, which is drawn from one of the biggest IP brands in the world, dropped with $15M less than Sony's horror spinoff.
A lower budget may limit the financial damage, but in no way does it create audience demand. And that's the point. Choosing CLAYFACE as the DCU’s third film was the misstep. Oh, and making 3 out of 4 set in the SUPERMAN universe. Yes, the DC brand is in trouble. What's new?
Il merite.

Denis Villeneuve is the latest filmmaker to praise Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s DIGGER (2026), calling it “a furious comedy,” “a very important movie” and comparing its climate-change satire to Stanley Kubrick’s DR. STRANGELOVE.
Villeneuve also praised the film’s practical effects, handmade miniatures and Tom Cruise’s performance, concluding: “I think it’s a total success.”

Not the worst for $40M+ film but think how far that DC brand has fallen when its properties can’t hit $30M+

DC’s CLAYFACE uncovered $3.5M in previews yesterday—around the same as BLUE BEETLE and SHAZAM 2.
Decent for the budget, extremely soft for the DC brand.

$3.5M Thursday previews for #Clayface; likely a $20M - $25M weekend. With a $44 million budget, I can 100% see this breaking even/making a small profit, but if that’s your idea of a “win” for a brand like DC, you’re deluded. Man of Tomorrow will be the real test next year. 🧠

#Clayface Was a lazy disaster that only accomplished to revert DC deeper into unimportance. The Villian was soft-looking and bland as ever, the story lacked proper pacing and structure. Character development for Clayface was rushed and the direction was elemertary at best! Wait for streaming or the plane. Full review below!

#ClayfaceMovie: That's 0-3 for me with the new DCU. You can tell this was originally intended to be a streaming release, given the rushed pacing and lackluster presentation. I did vibe with the body horror elements and the yearning for connection as you slowly lose control of yourself, which reminded me of some of the classic Universal monster films. However, the final product is a villain origin story that might have been better suited as an HBO Max miniseries. At least then, there would have been more room to explore its themes beyond the thin, surface level stuff we got here.
