The legendary John le Carré was born on this day in 1931. After serving in the British Army and British Intelligence during the Cold War he turned to writing full time in 1963 with the success of his third novel, THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD.
Writers who have not read THE PIGEON TUNNEL, an autobiographical look at his life and publishing journey, should pick it up immediately.
John le Carré passed away December 12, 2020.
He lives on through the immortality of his work.
“Out of the secret world I once knew I have tried to make a theatre for the larger worlds we inhabit. First comes the imagining, then the search for reality. Then back to the imagining, and to the desk where I’m sitting now.”
- John le Carré
A true master of the craft.

On the eve of The AGI Chronicles (which comes out tomorrow!) I'm publishing an excerpt from "Big Blob of Compute," a 2017 internal research document by Dario Amodei, back when he was a researcher at OpenAI.
It's never been published before, but BBOC is, in my mind, the essay that started the AI race. It described Amodei's hypothesis that scaling up AI models was the best way, by far, to make them smarter. GPT-2 was an experiment to test the hypothesis, and when it worked, OpenAI went all-in on scaling, which led to the race we have today.
It's a fascinating historical artifact that deserves to see the light of day. And it's taken on mythical proportions inside the AI industry, which is now spending trillions of dollars building the "big blobs" that Amodei thought would be necessary to get to AGI.
Enjoy! And please pre-order the book if you do!

I built an antidote to the America-as-villain history and English lessons taught in too many of our public schools.
I wish the schools would do this. I spent 24 years trying from the inside, but the system is too sclerotic. The older teachers are too comfortable to push back enough, the younger teachers too poorly educated. The curriculum companies are captured. The School Boards are tied down by state regulations.
So it's down to you and me to teach our kids why America deserves to be loved and defended. It'll happen at your kitchen table. You'll read, your child will read, and you’ll talk together, 20-30 minutes, 2-3 times a week, about what it means to be an American.
Unit 1 is done. I hope your family will run with it. (Link in reply.)
