Thunder Bay Public Library staff could strike as soon as Thursday.
A library media release on Wednesday night says CUPE Locals 3120 and 87-18 negotiators have reached a collective bargaining negotiation impasse with management.
Ontario has decided the part of northwestern Ontario in the Central Time Zone (west of Upsala) will follow Manitoba's lead in permanent Daylight Saving Time.
Fun fact, towns in the longitudnal line between Atikokan, Mishkeegogamang FN & Pickle Lake swore off DST years ago.
The Supreme Court of Canada upheld a reduced sentence in a case expected to have significant effect on the way judges consider Indigenous men who commit violent crimes against Indigenous women.

Hey, I don’t want to alarm anyone but I’m starting to wonder if Ontario’s current government might not fully appreciate the value that a free press contributes to our democratic discourse.

Must read by @connie_walker for @Yellowhead_ Institute explaining the impending destruction of documents from >38,000 residential school Survivors, the importance of these documents to families, and the lack of any accountability for the horrific systemic abuse in the schools.
These documents identify over 5,000 alleged abusers.
Most survivors do not know they must opt-in to have their records preserved, and only ~100 have applied to do so.
---------
"More than 38,000 survivors applied for compensation for residential school abuse through the Independent Assessment Process (IAP) and the records produced in their claims make up the most comprehensive archive that exists of Survivor testimony — five times the number of Survivors applied to the IAP than gave testimony to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission...
Survivors were promised that testimony in IAP hearings would remain confidential. So very little information from the IAP has ever been made public. But through their testimonies, the IAP Secretariat knows about the scale of abuse at every single residential School that was covered by the Settlement Agreement. They know what kind of abuse happened, they know how many people were accused of abusing kids and they know the names of alleged abusers..."

“Protecting people living with mental illness should be the priority of every member of the House of Commons.”
Key words: “should be.”
If your mental health tortures you so that you wish to end your own life, you can’t. But us important guys, we should care about that.

The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting 26 per cent of young people in northwestern Ontario are vaping, compared to a provincial regional average of 11 per cent.
Thunder Bay daily runs A1 above the fold a story about our social services agency decrying municipal election candidates for spreading misinformation.
An unrelated A1 above-the-fold story explores how residential school denier candidates are the real victims of uncivil discourse.
2x this year, best friends at other times in life told me they’re connecting with their Indigeneity when visiting TBay. They never told me back then.
It happened again tonight. She said this gen’s “not finding it - knowing it.”

But today every child matters. I see all the orange shirts.

Video provided to me, Indigenous Insider, by a source who requested anonymity. This is the Second Sons, white nationalist group in Kamloops, BC earlier today where they gathered near the former Kamloops Indian residential school at Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc Nation. This comes three days before Canada’s National Day of Truth & Reconciliation.
I think Kory Teneycke is the most interesting person in Canadian politics.
His willingness to just tell you that it’s checkmate in X number of moves is so delightfully bold without being tacky.
But all spectacle aside, he’s telling you they’re coming for the rights of teachers.
Ford's Kory Teneycke said "teachers will be next" after Stephen Lecce's notwithstanding clause stripped & threatened 55,000 CUPE support staff constitutional right to strike or bargain by dictating 4-year contract below inflation & $220M fine for striking.
Claiming “Ontario plans to cut $121 million from emergency firefighting in its 2026-2027 budget, despite the record-high number of wildfires this season,” Amnesty International is calling for a public inquiry into the province’s handling of the file.

I need someone in the Hill press to ask a very reasonable, mainstream question: WHY can't Canadians have environmental regulations and First Nations consultation and the right to strike while our government explores new markets for our goods and services?
WHY can't we have both?

The exasperation in Elizabeth May’s voice is earned.
We’re watching decades of democratic culture peeled away at the federal and provincial levels in Canada. The Green Party leader is right to say we should want answers & engagement instead of C-5 & the bulldozer.
Does it matter?
As Canadian politicians were pitching their major project plans to foreign investors, First Nations youth from northern Ontario were making their own pitch to Canadians to join the fight against them.
